Subject: Front Axle Seal Leakage.
Front axle seal leaks may be due to flexing of the axle shaft during periods of extreme
loading. When the axle shaft flexes Seal (92-1774) may not be able to maintain contact
around the entire circumference of the axle shaft. If this occurs, under some conditions,
small amounts of oil can escape. Wheel bearing failure may also result if the oil dilutes
the grease in the wheel bearing
Axle Seal (99-6969) has been improved to maintain contact with the axle shaft when
flexing occurs. Axle Seal (99-6969) should be used whenever repairs to the front axle
are performed on any unit listed above. The seal should be installed in accordance with
the service manual and should be installed with the metal insert facing outboard. Coat
the outer diameter of the seal with a light film of oil during installation. A light film of oil
applied to the outer surface will ease installation and help prevent damage to the rubber
surface of the seal.
Note: Other machines that use the Dana GT20 axle may benefit from the use of this
improved seal (e.g. GROUNDSMASTER
®
200 and 300 series tractors).
