Subject: Importance of Routine Reel Drive Hose Inspections.
A hydraulic hose that goes through repetitive movement (cycling) is considered to be a
“consumable” or wear item. Like v-belts or tires, they will wear and need replacement.
Checking Hydraulic hoses for damage is listed as a routine inspection on the Daily
Maintenance Checklist (contained in the Operators Manual). Inspections are very
important because after time, reel motor hoses go through many repetitive lift and lower
cycles. This leads to hose degradation and leaks.
In almost all cases, routine inspections will uncover potential hose wear and damage.
Replacement of questionable hoses will significantly reduce chances of a hose leak,
which can lead to turf damage or even operator injury caused by oil spray by a broken
hose.
As an added note of caution, the reel motor hoses can develop pinhole leaks at the
rubber Clamp Blocks on the front 3 lift arms. While the Clamp Blocks are designed to
allow hose movement during normal lifting and lowering of the cutting units, if the Clamp
Block retainer Screws are too tight the Blocks can compress and restrict hose
movement. This can strain the hoses at the blocks and lead to hose leaks.
Daily hose inspections on the front 3 cutting unit lift arm hose Clamp Blocks should be
performed on all machines. If any of the hoses shows signs of leakage or blistering of
the outer covers in the areas of the Blocks, hose replacement is required.
