Subject: Precautionary measures for engines equipped with a turbo-charger.
Engines equipped with turbochargers require precautions due to the nature of
turbocharger operation. Extreme heat is created in the turbocharger during normal
loading. If the turbo-charger is not allowed to cool down after periods of operation,
damage to the turbocharger is possible.
The turbocharger bearings are supplied with oil only while the engine is running.
Should the turbocharger spin without the engine running, damage to the turbocharger
can result. Situations such as trailering a unit with the exhaust heading into the wind
can also spin the turbocharger without proper lubrication.
Important: Allow the engine to idle for five minutes before shutting it off after full load
operation. Failure to due so may lead to turbo-charger trouble.
When trailering equipment always load the equipment so that the exhaust points to the
rear. If loading the equipment in this manner is not possible, then cover the exhaust
pipe to ensure air cannot be forced into the exhaust.
