Subject: Ensure adequate grounding in electrical systems to prevent damage.
The electrical system ground (earth) path resistance can increase due to corrosion or
disturbances during repairs. A ground fault (incomplete ground) of this nature can
cause the engine to be the only path to ground. When an engine or other drivetrain
component becomes the only ground path other failures can occur. These failures can
be as simple as a seized throttle cable caused by the heat of being a conductor, or as
extensive as engine bearing failures due to arcing. The addition of high amperage
accessories, such as optional lighting, can accentuate the damage caused by a ground
fault.
When optional lighting or other higher amperage accessories are installed, insure that
the ground is routed through a properly sized wire to create a direct negative battery
connection. Do not rely on a ground tied to the nearest frame member
Note: This issue is critical for the models listed due to the type of connection between
the crankshaft and the drive train.
