Subject: Oil Leak at the Rear 4WD Axle Wheel Ends
Some 4WD machines may exhibit an oil leak at one or both wheel ends of the rear axle.
This leak will appear as a slight weeping at the upper pivot area and/or lower pivot area
of the final drives (see picture). This situation is created by the Vent that can allow a
slight pressure to build inside the axle housing (from temperatures generated during
operation). This type of oil leak causes the surrounding surface to become damp and
allows dirt and debris to collect. Unless the leak is significant enough to form a drip,
periodic cleaning is all that is required.
If a drip forms, the condition can be improved through a minor internal vent modification.
Simply pry the top Cap from the Vent and replace the rubber diaphragm with a Foam
Insert (110-4815). Snap the top Cap back into place and check that the axle oil level is
correct (see Operators Manual).
