Subject: Determining cause for the Mow function disengaging.
The Mow function may disengage during operation for a number of reasons. Setup,
adjustment, wear, lack of lubrication, and operator influences can all be contributing
factors. The following procedures are recommended when inspecting equipment for
this issue. If the malfunction continues after completing these steps, disassemble the
No. 1 Valve Detent and inspect for wear, corrosion, lack of lubrication, and damage.
Replace any faulty parts found, re-assemble, and adjust according to the instructions
found in the Control Valve No. 1 Spool Detent Replacement section of the Service
Manual (chapter 4).
1. Ensure the operator is not influencing the malfunction, such as using the lift pedal for
a footrest.
2. Determine whether Service Bulletin “Mow Function Stops During Mowing” is
involved (dated September 18, 1998). This bulletin involves a specific serial number
range of products.
3. Inspect for lack of lubrication, wear, or sheared roll pins in the control linkage.
4. Inspect for heavy wear on Lift Pivot (83-0060) where it contacts the bottom of the Lift
and Mow Pedals. Replacement Lift Pivots have a rounded top surface, which
reduces the wear against the pedals (some units have a Lift Pivot with square cut
corners). Also, the Lift Pivot should not contact the “L” shaped mounting bracket
when pivoting.
5. Verify that the Valve Spools, Blocks, and Linkage are properly aligned (do not bind).
6. Verify that the Control Rod is properly adjusted to ensure the Camshaft fully strokes
the Valve Spool into detent and that the MOW Pedal does not contact the Floor Plate.
7. Adjust the slotted cap to set the “MOW” detent as described in the Service Manual.
The slotted cap is installed with Loctite
®
and may require moderate heating of the
cap to turn it.
NOTE: The goal is to adjust the Detent slotted cap only enough to retain the spool
in position while mowing. This will allow the Mow and Lift Pedals to be
operated with minimal effort.
