Subject: No Reel Drive Due to Loose Cutting Unit Spline Nut.
The standard cutting unit Spline Nut (93-1394) and groomer Spline Nut (77-0560) may
not remain tight to the reel shaft due to pressure spikes in the hydraulic system.
Standard Spline Nut (93-1394) is used in all cutting units equipped with tapered reel
bearings, such as Model 04404, 04406, 04408, 04450, and 04468 cutting units.
Groomer Spline Nut (77-0560) is used in place of the standard Spline Nut when
Groomer Kit (04455) is installed. The repair procedures are the same for both.
To correct a loose Spline Nut situation, use the following procedure. If all steps are
followed closely and the repair fails to prevent the problem from recurring, contact the
Toro Commercial Products Distributor in your area for assistance.
Attaching Spline Nut (93-1394 or 77-0560) to the reel shaft:
1. Loosen the bearing preload adjustment nut at the opposite end of the reel to ensure
it will not influence installation of the Spline Nut.
2. Remove the Spline Nut and thoroughly inspect it for damage such as tiny hairline
fractures. Replace if necessary.
3. High strength Loctite
®
271 threadlocker is used to secure the Spline Nut. Clean and
prepare the reel shaft and Spline Nut threads according to the directions on the
product container. Apply Loctite 271 as directed. Tighten to 60 ft-lb (80 Nm).
Note: Lower strength Loctite 242 was originally used on these units.
4. Assemble the cutting unit as usual (refer to Service Manual) but do not operate until
the Loctite 271 has fully cured.
