CheckingtheEngineOilLevel
ServiceInterval:Beforeeachuseordaily(Checktheoil
whentheengineiscold.)
Theengineisshippedwithhigh-qualityoilinthecrankcase;
however,theoillevelmustbecheckedbeforeandafterthe
engineisrststarted.
Crankcasecapacityisapproximately1.9liters(2quarts)with
thelter.
Note:Thebesttimetochecktheengineoiliswhenthe
engineiscoolbeforeithasbeenstartedfortheday.Ifithas
alreadybeenrun,allowtheoiltodrainbackdowntothe
sumpforatleast10minutesbeforechecking.Iftheoillevel
isatorbelowtheaddmarkonthedipstick,addoiltobring
theoilleveltothefullmark.Donotoverll.Iftheoillevelis
betweenthefullandaddmarks,nooiladditionisrequired.
1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurface,stoptheengine,
removethekey,andwaitforallmovingpartstostop
beforeleavingtheoperatingposition.
2.Cleanaroundtheoildipsticksothatdirtcannotfall
intothellerholeanddamagetheengine(Figure8).

3.Removethedipstick,wipeitclean,andinstallituntil
itisfullyseated.
4.Removethedipstickandchecktheoillevelonthe
dipstick.
TheoillevelshouldbeuptotheFullmarkonthe
metalendofthedipstick.
5.IftheoillevelisbelowtheFullmark,removetheller
tubecapandaddoiluntilthelevelreachestheFull
markonthedipstick(Figure9).Donotoverll.

6.Installthellertubecapanddipstick.

StartingtheEngine
1.PlaceallofthecontrolsintheOfforDisengaged
position.
2.MovethethrottlelevermidwaybetweentheSlowand
Fastposition.
3.MovethechokelevertotheOnposition.
Note:Chokeisnotrequiredwhenstartingawarm
engine.
4.Insertthekeyintotheignitionswitchandrotateit
clockwisetostarttheengine.Releasethekeywhenthe
enginestarts.Regulatethechoketokeeptheengine
runningsmoothly.
Important:Topreventoverheatingofthestarter
motor,donotengagethestarterlongerthan10
seconds.After10secondsofcontinuouscranking,
wait60secondsbeforeengagingthestartermotor
again.
5.Movethethrottlelevertothedesiredenginespeed.
6.Pulltheapleverasfarforwardaspossible.
7.Pushthereelleverforwarduntilthecatchreleases,
thenpushittotherearuntiltheleverhitsStop.
Note:Donotallowthesweepertostandstillwiththe
rakeengagedasturfdamagemayoccur.
