3. Inspect differential case (27) in the area where the
bevel side gears (5) and pinion gear shafts (6) mesh.
Replace case if machined areas are scored or if the pin-
ion shaft (25) fits loosely in its bore (Fig. 38).

IMPORTANT:The ring gear (32) and pinion gear (8)
must be replaced as a matched set.
4. Inspect bevel side gears (5), pinion gear shafts (6),
pinion gear (8), and ring gear (32) for abnormal wear or
damage. Replace any gear that is worn or damaged.
Cracked, broken, missing, or chipped gear teeth are
not
acceptable (Fig. 39).
IMPORTANT:If any part of a bearing needs replace-
ment, both bearing cone and cup must be replaced.
5. Replace bearing cones (9, 22, or 29) and corre-
sponding bearing cups (10, 23, or 30) if any of the follow-
ing conditions occur (Fig. 40 and 41):
A. Spalling or pitting on roller or cone contact sur-
faces. Corrosion that can not be cleaned up with
light polishing.
B. The rib face on the cone is worn back, or rollers
are worn or scored. The roller cage is cracked or
broken.
C. Peeling, gouges, or nicks inside the cup or on
rollers. Scalloping, high spots, brinelling, or burrs in
the cups.
