Popping or grinding sounds coming from either the front or rear differential in 4WD Workman
vehicles have been reported in 4WD machines built between 2009 and 2013. Other related
observations include difficulty in steering, front or rear tires dragging, and general traction bind. The
issue only occurs when the vehicle is operated on dry pavement in specific maneuvers: switching
vehicle from backward to forward travel and in slow extreme turning situations. (i.e., trailer backing,
etc.) A contributing factor has been determined to be incorrect adjustment of the steering tie rods,
resulting in the vehicle turning sharper in one direction, and undesired engagement of 4WD.
In a few units, front CV joint failures have been reported. If steering bias exists, the CV joint can
be over extended past its design limit for bend radius in sharp turns.
Turning radius inspection must be performed to determine if adjustment is indicated. See the
attached diagram for inspection process, turning radius specifications and adjustment procedure. If
replacing the CV axle, inspect the vehicle turning radius performance in full right and left turns after
the CV installation, then perform a toe-in evaluation to verify correct adjustment.
The unit should be inspected for this issue if steering complaints, driveline bind or CV joint failure
occurs.
