September 18, 2017
Affected Units: Models: Serial Numbers:
Workman HDX-Auto 07390/H/TC 314000001-499999999
Situation:
There have been reports of harsh driveline engagement including abrupt clutch engagement
upon acceleration, rear tire spin and grinding noises during gear selection on the Workman
HDX-Auto Units.
This utility vehicle uses a Constant Velocity Transmission commonly referred to as a CVT. A
drive clutch located on the engine crankshaft and a driven clutch located on the transmission
gearbox connected by a cogged drive belt. When a gear on the transmission is selected, the
clutch belt movement is transmitted from the transmission to the rear wheels through the
gearbox. The engine RPM is critical to smooth engagement as well as gear selection in the
transmission. The vehicle must NOT be in motion when selecting a gear or range in the
transmission. This will prevent potential harsh engagement and transmission grind. Note: This
is not a fluid based automotive style transmission with torque converter. Slight gear noise and
clunking can be considered normal as the transmission is shifted from Park to Reverse or Drive
and upon initial movement or change in direction.
Instructions:
Verify engine idle RPM while engine is at operating temperature per manufacturers
specifications listed below. For proper gear selection, make certain unit is at idle, NOT in motion
or under adverse load when selecting from park or changing vehicle direction.
2014-2015 Model year units shall be set at 1,100 ± 50 RPM. Note: If unit has had clutch
replacement P/N 132-6780 and 132-6785 unit shall be set to 1,300 ± 50 RPM.
2016+ Model year units shall be set at 1,300 ±50 RPM
Note: Idle speed adjustment screw is located behind intake just below intake dome. Turning
screw clockwise will increase rpm.
If vehicle still has a harsh engagement, or is experiencing grinding gears and difficult gear
selection, it is recommended to contact your Toro Commercial Distributor to have a qualified
Toro Service Technician diagnose this concern.
