Electrical System
Engine Starter Solenoid
The engine starter solenoid is attached to a bracket on
the starter motor (Fig. 17).
Testing
1. Make sure engine is off. Disconnect battery. Discon-
nect solenoid electrical connections.
2. Apply 12 VDC directly across the solenoid coil posts.
The solenoid should click. Make sure resistance across
the main contact posts is less than 1 ohm (continuity).
3. Remove voltage from solenoid coil posts. The sole-
noid should click. Make sure resistance across the main
contact posts is infinite ohms (no continuity).
4. Replace starter solenoid if necessary.
5. Reconnect electrical connections to solenoid.
Torque nuts on coil posts from 15 to 20 in–lb (1.7 to 2.3
N–m) and nuts on main contact posts from 50 to 60 in–lb
(5.7 to 6.8 N–m).
6. Reconnect battery.
