Alwaysmaintainawarenessofwhatliesaheadinthe
directionofforwardtravel.Avoidoperationinclose
proximityofbuildings,fences,andotherequipment.
Lookbehindfrequentlytoensurethatthemachine
isoperatingproperlyandalignmentismaintained
withpreviouspasses.
Alwayscleartheareaofalldamagedmachineparts,
suchasbrokentines,etc.,topreventtheirbeing
pickedupbymowersorotherturfmaintenance
equipment.
Replacebrokentinesandinspectandcorrect
damagetothosestilluseable.Repairanyother
machinedamagebeforecommencingoperation.
Themachinewillaeratedeeperthanmostgreens
aerators.Onnativeormodiedpush-upgreensand
tees,thedeeperdepthandlongerhollowtinesmay
havedifcultyejectingthecompletecore.Thisis
duetohardernativesoilthatsticksintheendofthe
tine.Side-ejectgreens/teestinesfromTorowillstay
cleanerandreducethetimerequiredtocleanthe
tinesout.Thisconditioniseventuallyeliminated
withcontinuedaerationandtop-dressingprograms.
HardGround
Ifthegroundistoormtoobtainthedesiredcoring
depth,thecoringheadcangetintoabouncingrhythm.
Thisisduetothehardpanthetinesareattempting
topenetrate.Thisconditioncanbecorrectedby
attemptingthefollowing:
Donotaerateifgroundistoohardordry,best
resultsareobtainedafterarainorwhenturfhas
beenwateredthepreviousday.
Changetoa3-tinehead,ifattemptingtousethe
4-tineheadorreducethenumberoftinesper
stomperarm.Attempttomaintainasymmetrical
tinecongurationtoevenlyloadthestomperarms.
Reduceaeratorpenetration(depthsetting),if
groundishardpacked.Cleanupcores,waterturf,
andre–aerateatadeeperpenetration.
Aerationofsoiltypesbuiltontopofhardsubsoils(i.e.
soil/sandplacedoverrockysoil)cancauseundesired
holequality.Thisiscausedwhentheaerationdepth
isgreaterthanthebuiltupsoilandthesubsoilistoo
hardtopenetrate.Whenthetinescontactthisharder
subsoiltheaeratormayliftandcausethetopofthe
holestobecomeelongated.Reducetheaeratingdepth
sufcientlytoavoidpenetrationintothehardsubsoil.
Entrance/Exit
Iftheentrance/exitholequalityisdeteriorating,the
clutchmaynotbeengagingsoonenough.Checkthe
following:
Theno.3switchlocationonH–Frame
Clutchwear/slippage
Iftheholequalityuponentranceisslotted(pulled
forward)orthecoringheadfailstoengagebefore
contactingtheturf,theengagementpositionswitch
mayrequireadjustment.
Verifythattheswitchassemblyalongsidethe
H-Frameisnomorethan0.06inches(1.5mm)
fromthetargetplate
Verifythatthe#3switchisfunctioningproperly.
Ifneeded,loosentheswitchmountingplateandlift
toitshighestpositionandre–securethemounting
plate.Thehighertheswitch,thesoonertheclutch
engages.
Ifthecoringheadfailstostartbeforeentranceand
thepositionswitchislocatedashighaspermissible,
theelectricclutchmayhavedeterioratedsufciently
tocauseadelayinengagement.ContactyourToro

MiniTine(QuadTine)
Themini-tineheaddevelopedbyToroisaveryfast
waytoaerateduetothedoublerowdesign.Thiscoring
headrequirestheholespacingtobesetat2.5inches
(6.3cm).Groundspeediscriticaltomaintainthe
appearanceof1.25inch(3.2cm)holespacing.Referto
theholespacingadjustmentsectionifyourholespacing
requiresasmallchange.
Withtheminitineheadorlargersolidtineuse,theturf
rootstructureisimportanttopreventingturfdamage
duetotearingoftherootzone.Ifthecentertwoarms
begintolifttheturfordamagetotherootzoneis
excessive,proceedasfollows:
Increasetheholespacing
Decreasetinesize
Removesomeofthetines
Thisdamageiscausedbytheliftingactionthatsolid
tinescreatewhenpulledfromtheturf.Thisliftcan
teartherootzoneifthedensityoftinesordiameter
oftinesistoohigh.
