Understandingthe
PrinciplesofOperation
The3-pointhitchlinkageofthetractorliftstheaerator
fortransportandlowersitforoperation.
Thepowertake-off(PTO)powerfromthetractoris
transmittedviashafts,agearbox,anddrivebeltstoa
numberofcrankshaftswhichdrivethetineholding
armsintotheturfsurface.
AsthetractortravelsforwardwiththePTOengaged
andthemachinelowered,aseriesofholesare
createdintheturfsurface.
Thepenetrationdepthofthetinesisdeterminedby
theheightofthedepthcontrol.
Thedistancebetweentheholescreatedisdetermined
bythegearratio(orhydrostatictractionpedalposition)
ofthetractorandthenumberoftinesineachtine
head.Simplychangingenginerpmdoesnotchange
holespacing.
PracticingtheOperating
Procedures
Important:WhenconnectingthePTO,ensure
thattheaeratorisnotliftedhigherthanis
necessary.Liftingthemachinetoohighwillcause
thePTOshaftknucklestobreak(Figure25).The
PTOcanoperateuptoanangleof25°,butcan
neverexceeda35°anglewhentheaeratorisat
itshighestposition,orsevereshaftdamagemay
occur.

Operatethetractoratrecommendedgearsettings
andPTOdrivespeedsandbecomethoroughly
familiarwiththeaerator/tractorhandling.Practice
stoppingandstarting,raisingandloweringtheaerator,
disengagingthePTOdriveandaligningthemachine
