DANGER signals an extreme hazard that will cause serious injury or death if the recommended precautions are not followed. Preparation 1. WARNING signals a hazard that may cause serious injury or death if the recommended precautions are not followed. While mowing, always wear substantial footwear and long trousers. Do not operate the equipment when barefoot or wearing open sandals. 2. CAUTION signals a hazard that may cause minor or moderate injury if the recommended precautions are not followed.
4. Always be sure of your footing on slopes. 5. Walk, never run. • before clearing blockages or unclogging chute; 6. For wheeled rotary machines, mow across the face of slopes, never up and down. • before checking, cleaning or working on the lawnmower; Exercise extreme caution when changing direction on slopes. • after striking a foreign object.
Sound Pressure Level Sound Power Level This unit has an equivalent continuous A-weighted sound pressure at the operator ear of: 88.5 dB(A), based on measurements of identical machines per ANSI B71.5-1984 procedures. This unit has a sound power level of: 100 dB(A)/1 pW, based on measurements of identical machines per Directive 84/538/EEC and amendments. Vibration Level This unit has a maximum hand-arm vibration level of 10.51 m/s@, based on measurement of identical machines per ISO 5349 procedures.

Raise control bar. Raise control bar. Lower control bar. Assembly Note: Handle 2. Assembly 1. Loosen handle knobs and lift top handle half in an arc until handle halves are in line and nest together (Fig. 2). Note: 2. Use care to prevent pinching or stretching of cables. Tighten knobs securely. Note: Belt cover may need to be loosened and slightly moved out of the way to make enough room to place handle in high height setting. Adjust self–propelled cable. See Maintenance section.
2. Remove screw that fastens cover plate to the housing (Fig. 5). 3. Two shoulder bolts on the housing protrude through slotted holes in the cover plate and do not have to be loosened or removed. Cover plate moves over the shoulder bolt heads (Fig. 6). 4. Slide cover plate clockwise to install or counterclockwise to remove. 5. Secure with screw. 6. Install guard plate over side discharge opening (Fig. 7). 7. Secure with two bolts and nuts. 8. Connect spark plug wire (Fig. 4).
Note: Note: 1. Do not mix gasoline and oil in the product fuel tank. Oil that is at room temperature mixes easily and more thoroughly than cold oil. NEVER USE METHANOL, GASOLINE CONTAINING METHANOL, GASOHOL CONTAINING MORE THAN 10% ETHANOL, PREMIUM GASOLINE OR WHITE GAS BECAUSE ENGINE FUEL SYSTEM COULD BE DAMAGED. Clean around fuel cap before removing (Fig. 9). Fill fuel tank with gasoline/oil mix to bottom of filler neck, not into filler neck. DO NOT OVER–FILL TANK.
2. clutches, mower may need to be pushed forward one inch after self-propelled bail has been released. Release blade control bail (Fig. 13). Both the engine and blade will stop. See your dealer immediately if they do not. To Restart Engine Adjusting Cutting Height 1. Each wheel is adjusted individually with a wheel height adjustment lever. Cutting heights are 1”, 1-1/2”, 2”, 2-1/2”, 3” and 3-1/2 inches (25, 38, 51, 64, 76 and 89 mm). Repeat STARTING ENGINE procedure with throttle lever in 2.
Maintenance Continued safe and dependable operation requires routine maintenance. Recommended Maintenance Schedule Service Item 5 Hours 25 Hours 50 Hours Fasteners Check blade and engine mounting fasteners frequently. Keep all nuts, bolts and screws tight to ensure safe operation. Air Filter Remove and clean each mowing season or every 25 hours. Clean more frequently if operating conditions are dusty. X Spark Plug Clean, inspect and gap. Replace if necessary.
POTENTIAL HAZARD • If you leave the wire on the spark plug, someone could start the engine. WHAT CAN HAPPEN • Accidental starting of the engine could seriously injure you or other bystanders. HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARD • Pull the wire off the spark plug before you do any maintenance. Also push the wire aside so it does not accidentally contact the spark plug. Air Filter Drain Gasoline 1. Clean air filter once every season or every 25 hours; clean more frequently under dusty conditions.
3. Install spark plug by hand, then torque to 180 in.–lbs. (15 ft.–lbs.) (20 N⋅m) (Fig. 4). 4. Reconnect spark plug wire when maintenance is completed. Blade A straight, sharp blade provides maximum cutting performance. Regularly inspect and sharpen blade. Clean Mower Housing POTENTIAL HAZARD • Blade is sharp. A clean mower housing provides the best cutting performance. Check for grass build-up and clean after each use. • Contact with sharp blade can cause serious 1.
4. Examine blade driver for bent or sheared drive lugs. Replace if necessary. 3. Torque blade nut to 47 ft.–lbs. (63 N⋅m) (Fig. 26). Note: Blade Sharpening 4. POTENTIAL HAZARD • When sharpening blade, pieces of blade could be accidentally thrown. WHAT CAN HAPPEN • Thrown objects can cause serious eye injury. HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARD • Wear proper eye protection when Blade nut must be replaced after installing and removing four (4) times.
Self-propelled Drive Cleaning (self–propelled models only) 4. Remove the blade nut and blade (Fig. 23). See BLADE REMOVAL section. 5. Remove blade driver by tapping with plastic or fiber hammer in the direction of rotation (Fig. 30). This will loosen the blade driver from taper on crankshaft. 6. Remove capscrews attaching muffler cover and baffle plate to engine mounting plate (Fig. 31). 7. Clean carbon deposits from muffler cover and baffle plate with wire brush making sure exhaust vents are clear.
Troubleshooting Your mower was designed and built for trouble-free operation. Check the following components and items carefully. If a problem continues, see your Authorized Toro Service Dealer. PROBLEM Engine will not start Engine starts hard or loses power Engine runs rough Mower or engine vibrates excessively Uneven cutting pattern CORRECTIVE ACTION 1. Fill fuel tank with fresh gasoline/oil mix 2. Move throttle lever to the FAST position 3. Press primer three (3) times 4.
PROBLEM Discharge chute plugs Mower will not self-propel CORRECTIVE ACTION 1. Move throttle lever from SLOW to FAST position 2. Raise cutting height 3. Allow grass to dry before mowing 4. Clean underside of mower deck 1. Adjust self-propelled cable 2. Clean debris under belt cover Accessories For special conditions, the following accessories may be purchased at your local Authorized Toro Service Dealer. • Rear Bag Kit, Model No.
Note: 3. Fold handle only as illustrated. If handle is folded in opposite direction damage will occur to control cables. Loosen knobs securing top handle section to bottom section and fold top handle section back towards rear of mower into storage position. 3. Remove spark plug (Fig. 4) and spin engine rapidly using starter to blow excess oil from the cylinder. Clean spark plug or replace if cracked, broken or electrodes are worn. 4. Install spark plug and torque to 180 in.-lbs. (15 ft.-lbs.
