• Mow only in daylight or in good artificial light. • Do not use pressure cleaning equipment on the machine. • Stay alert for holes in the terrain and other hidden hazards. • Never store the machine with gasoline in the tank and inside a building where fumes can reach an open flame or spark. • Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating parts. Keep clear of the discharge opening at all times. • Allow the engine to cool before storing in any enclosure.

Setup 4. Rotate the handle rearward to the operating position, and lock the handle at your desired height. Important: You must install the recoil-starter rope in the rope guide.

To drain the excess oil, refer to Changing the Engine Oil (page 13). Filling the Engine with Oil Important: If the oil level in the crankcase is too low or too high and you run the engine, you may damage the engine. No Parts Required Procedure 6. Install the dipstick securely. Important: The machine does not come with oil in the engine.

Product Overview Operation Filling the Fuel Tank DANGER Gasoline is extremely flammable and explosive. A fire or explosion from gasoline can burn you and others. • To prevent a static charge from igniting the gasoline, place the container and/or machine directly on the ground before filling, not in a vehicle or on an object. • Fill the tank outdoors when the engine is cold. Wipe up spills. • Do not handle gasoline when smoking or around an open flame or sparks.

Checking the Engine Oil Level 6. Install the dipstick securely. Service Interval: Before each use or daily—Check the engine oil level. Adjusting the Cutting Height Note: Max. fill: 0.59 l (20 oz), type: SAE 30 or SAE 10W-30 detergent oil with an API service classification of SF, SG, SH, SJ, SL, or higher. WARNING Adjusting the cutting height may bring you into contact with the moving blade, causing serious injury. 1. Move the machine to a level surface. 2. Remove the dipstick (Figure 9).

Adjusting the Handle Height Starting the Engine 1. Hold the blade-control bar (Figure 12) against the handle. You may raise or lower the upper handle to a position comfortable for you. Using the Self-propel Drive Recycling the Clippings To operate the self-propel drive, simply walk with your hands on the upper handle and your elbows at your sides, and the machine will automatically keep pace with you (Figure 14). Model 20836 only Your machine comes from the factory ready to recycle the grass and leaf clippings back into the lawn. Note: The grass bag may remain on the machine while you are recycling the clippings.

1. Stop the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop. WARNING 2. Install the grass bag; refer to Removing the Grass Bag (page 11) and move the bag-on-demand lever to the bagging mode (model 20836 only) as shown in Figure 16. The blade is sharp; contacting the blade can result in serious personal injury. Stop the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop before leaving the operating position. • If there are more than 13 cm (5 inches) of leaves on the wheels at 51 mm (2 inches) and the rear wheels at 64 mm (2-1/2 inches). lawn, set the front cutting height 1 or 2 notches higher than the rear cutting height. Cutting Leaves • Slow down your mowing speed if the machine does not cut the leaves finely enough. • After cutting the lawn, ensure that half of the lawn shows through the cut leaf cover. You may need to make more than one pass over the leaves.

Servicing the Air Cleaner Changing the Engine Oil Service Interval: Yearly Service Interval: After the first 5 hours 1. Press down on the latch tabs on top of the air-cleaner cover (Figure 19). Cleaning under the Housing with a Washout Port (Model 20836 only) 4. Remove the blade by turning the blade bolt counterclockwise. Note: Save all the mounting hardware. WARNING 5. Install the new blade using the mounting hardware that you removed in step 4. The machine may dislodge material from under the machine housing. 6. Use a torque wrench to tighten the blade bolt to 82 N-m (60 ft-lb). • Wear eye protection. Important: A bolt torqued to 82 N-m (60 ft-lb) is very tight.

Storage 5. Check the engine oil level; refer to Checking the Engine Oil Level (page 8). Store the machine in a cool, clean, dry place. 6. Fill the fuel tank with fresh gasoline; refer to Filling the Fuel Tank (page 7). Preparing the Machine for Storage 7. Connect the wire to the spark plug.
