Operation Note: Determine the left and right sides of the machine from the normal operating position. 4 Each time before you mow, ensure that the self-propel drive, the blade-control bar, and blade-control lever operate properly. When you release the blade-control bar, the blade and self-propel drive should stop. If they do not, contact an Authorized Service Dealer.
Important: Do not add oil to the gasoline. DANGER Important: Do not use methanol, gasoline containing methanol, gasohol containing more than 10% ethanol, premium gasoline, or white gas. Using these fuels can damage the engine's fuel system. • Do not fill the fuel tank completely full. Add gasoline to the fuel tank until the level is 6 to 13 mm (1/4 to 1/2 inch) below the bottom of the filler neck. This empty space in the tank allows the gasoline to expand.
3. Fill the fuel tank with unleaded gasoline to within 6 to 13 mm (1/4 to 1/2 inch) from the top of the tank. Do not fill into the filler neck because the gasoline must have room to expand. 4. Move the ground-speed-control lever to the Neutral (N) position. 5. Pull the starter handle lightly until you feel resistance, then pull it sharply. 4. Install the fuel-tank cap and wipe up any spilled gasoline. 6. When the engine starts, move the throttle and set the ground-speed control as desired.
2. Move the ground-speed-control lever to the desired gear position. 3. Squeeze the traction-control bar against the handle (Figure 15). Figure 15 Figure 13 Disengaging the Traction Drive Disengaging the Blade Release the traction-control bar. Release the blade-control bar. Checking the Blade-Brake Clutch Important: When you release the blade-control bar, the blade should stop within 3 seconds. If it does not stop properly, stop using your machine immediately and contact an Authorized Service Dealer.
DANGER If the blade-brake clutch system is not working, the blade will continue to rotate when you release the blade-control bar. You could come into contact with blade, causing serious injury. • Ensure that the blade brake clutch works properly before each use. • Never use a machine equipped with a blade-brake clutch that has an inoperative safety system. • If the safety system on your machine does not operate properly, take it to an Authorized Service Dealer for repair. Figure 16 1.
Mowing with the Grass Bag Using the Grass Bag WARNING Installing the Grass Bag A worn grass bag could allow small stones and other similar debris to be thrown in the operator's or bystander's direction and result in serious personal injury or death to the operator or bystanders. 1. Release both the blade-control bar and the traction-control bar and wait for all moving parts to stop. 2. Raise and hold up the rear door (Figure 18). Check the grass bag frequently.
Cutting Grass • Cut only about a third of the grass blade at a time. • When cutting grass over 15 cm (6 inches) tall, mow at the highest cutting-height setting and walk slower; then mow again at a lower setting for the best lawn appearance. If the grass is too long, the machine may plug and cause the engine to stall. • Grass grows at different rates at different times of the year.
Maintenance Note: Determine the left and right sides of the machine from the normal operating position. Recommended Maintenance Schedule(s) Maintenance Service Interval Maintenance Procedure After the first 8 hours • Change the engine oil. Before each use or daily Every 25 hours • • • • • • Check the engine oil level. Ensure that the blade stops within 3 seconds after releasing the blade-control bar. Check the air cleaner. Check the blade-brake cable adjustment and adjust the cable, if necessary.
