7-8 CAMSHAFT/CRANKSHAFT
Camshaft, Tappet
Camshaft, Tappet Removal
Set the engine on a clean surface while parts are being removed.
Drain the oil (see Lubrication System chapter).
Remove:
Muffler (see Engine Top End chapter)
Throttle Control Panel (see Fuel System chapter)
Carburetor (see Fuel System chapter)
Intake Manifold (see Fuel System chapter)
Crankcase Cover (see Crankcase Cover Removal)
Rocker Covers [A]
Position the piston TDC at the end of the compression stroke.
Push down [A] the spring side of the rocker arm [B] and move it to
clear the push rod [C].
Remove the push rods and mark them so they can be installed in
their original positions during assembly.
Turn the crankcase up side down so that the tappets will fall away
from the cam lobes.
Pull the camshaft [A] out of the crankcase.
Remove the tappets [A] and mark them so they can be installed in
their original positions during assembly.

Apply engine oil to the following.
Tappet Journal
Camshaft Journal
Cam Lobe Surface
Camshaft Gear
Align the punch marks [A] on the crankshaft gear and camshaft gear.
Install the shim [B] on the camshaft.
