ReplacingtheDiggingTeeth
ServiceInterval:Beforeeachuseordaily—Checkthe
conditionofthediggingteethand
replaceanythatarewornordamaged.
Duetothehighamountofwearplacedonthediggingteeth,
youwillneedtoreplacethemperiodically.
Toreplaceasingletooth,removetheboltssecuringthetooth
toremoveit,theninstallanewtoothinthesameposition.
Torquetheboltssecuringtheteethto37to45N-m(27to33
ft-lb).
CheckingandAdjustingthe
DiggingChainandBoom
ServiceInterval:Every25hours
•Checkeachlinkinthechainforexcessivewear,suchas
linksthatwillnolongerholdteeth.
•Inspectthebottomoftheboomforwear
•Withthetrencherparalleltotheground,ensurethatthere
are3.8to6.3cm(1-1/2to2-1/2inches)betweenthe
bottomoftheboomandthetopofthebottomchain
span.Ifnotadjustthechaintension.
Important:Donotovertightenthechain.Excess
chaintensionmaydamagedrivecomponents.
Toreplaceawornchain,iporreplaceawornboom,orto
adjustthechaintension,usethefollowingprocedure:
1.Toreplacethechainortoiporreplacetheboom,
completethefollowing:
A.Removethe2boltsandnutssecuringtheboom
tothetrencherarm

B.Loosenthejamnutontheadjustingboltinthe
boom.
C.Loosentheadjustingboltuntilyoucanremove
thechainfromtheboom
D.Removethechainfromthedrivesprocket.
E.Ifthechainneedsreplacing,removetheboltand
nutsecuringthespoilsaugerandremovethe
augerandchain.
F.Removetheboom,ipitoversothebottom
becomesthetop(orifyouhavealreadyippedit
once,replaceit),andinstalltheboomagain.
G.Replacethenuts,bolts,andwasherssecuringthe
boom.
H.Ifinstallinganewchain,connectthelinksby
pressingorhammeringtheclevispinsupplied
withthechainthroughthelinks,thensecurethe
clevispinwiththecotterpinsuppliedwiththe
chain.
Important:Toavoidbendingthechainlinks,
placeblocksunderandbetweenthelinks
whenhammeringtheclevispinthrough.
I.Installthechainoverthedrivesprocketandfront
roller.
J.Ifyouremovedthespoilsauger,installitusingthe
boltandnutyouremovedpreviously.Torquethe
boltandnutto102N-m(75ft-lb).

4tocompletetheadjustment.
2.Loosenthe2boltsandnutssecuringtheboomtothe
trencherarm
3.Loosenthejamnutsecuringtheadjustmentbolt.
4.Turntheadjustmentboltinoroutasneededtoachieve
thedesiredtension.
5.Tightenthejamnut.
6.Torquethe2boltsandnutssecuringtheboomto183
to223N-m(135to165ft-lb).
ReplacingtheDriveSprocket
Overtime,thedrivesprocketwillwear,especiallywhenused
insandyorclaysoils.Whenthishappens,thediggingchain
willbegintoslip.Ifthechainslips,replacethedrivesprocket,
asfollows:
1.Raisethetrencherafewinchesabovetheground.
2.Stoptheengineandremovethekey.
3.Removethespoilsauger(
Figure61).
