ConnectingtoaDrilling-uidSource
Whendrillingandreaming,youpumpamixtureofbentonite
clay,water,andsometimesotheringredients,collectively
calleddrillinguidor“mud”,throughthepipeandintothe
bore.Thisdrillinguid,or“mud”,doesthefollowingfor
yourbore:
Lubricatesthedrillhead
Loosensthesoilintowhichthedrilliscutting
Penetratesandbindsloosesoiltokeepitfromcollapsing
ontheborepipe.
Important:Donotoperatethedrilling-uidpump
withoutapressurizedsupplyofdrillinguid,ordamage
tothepumpingsystemwillresult.
Thespecicmixtureyouneedwillvarydependingonyour
soiltypeandtheoperationthatyouareperforming.Referto
yourmixingsystemOperator’sManualfordetails.
Conversely,forsomejobs(dependingonthesoiltypeand
distance),youcanpumpscreenedwaterfromanaturalwater
source,suchasalakeorriver,throughthedrillinsteadof
mixeddrillinguid.

SettinguptheMixingSystem
Setupyourmixingsystemnearthedirectionaldrilllocation,
preferablydownwind,sothatfumesfromthemixingsystem
enginewillnotbotheryouwhileyouaredrilling.Followthe
instructionsprovidedinthemixingsystemOperator’sManual
forsettingitupandusingit.
Completethestepsfollowingtoconnecttheexithosefrom
themixingsystemtothedrilling-uidpumponthemachine:
1.Raisethecam-lockleversonthepump-inletcap,and
removethecap(Figure76).
