•Alwaysshutofftheengine,andremovethekey.
Waitforallmovementtostopandallowthe
machinetocoolbeforeadjusting,cleaning,or
repairingit.
•Theownermustensurethatalloperatorsare
welltrainedandcompetenttosafelyoperatethe
machine.
•Neverallowchildrenoruntrainedpeopleto
operateorservicethemachine.Localregulations
mayrestricttheageoftheoperator.
•Becomefamiliarwiththesafeoperationofthe
equipment,operatorcontrols,andsafetysigns.
•Shutofftheengine,removethekey(ifequipped),
andwaitforallmovementtostopbeforeyouleave
theoperator’sposition.Allowthemachinetocool
beforeadjusting,servicing,cleaning,orstoringit.
•Knowhowtoshutoffthemachinequickly.
•Checkthatoperator-presencecontrols,safety
switches,andshieldsareattachedandfunctioning
properly.Donotoperatethemachineunlessthey
arefunctioningproperly.
•Inspecttheareawhereyouwillusethemachine
andremoveallobjectsthatthemachinecould
throw.
•Keepthemanual(s)withthemachine.Goto

FuelSafety
•Useextremecareinhandlingfuel.Itisammable
anditsvaporsareexplosive.
•Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipes,andother
sourcesofignition.
•Useonlyanapprovedfuelcontainer.
•Donotremovethefuelcaporllthefueltank
whiletheengineisrunningorhot.
•Donotaddordrainfuelinanenclosedspace.
•Donotstorethemachineorfuelcontainerwhere
thereisanopename,spark,orpilotlight,such
asonawaterheaterorotherappliance.
•Ifyouspillfuel,donotattempttostarttheengine;
avoidcreatinganysourceofignitionuntilthefuel
vaporshavedissipated.
UnderstandingHorizontal
DirectionalDrilling
Horizontaldirectionaldrillingisaprocessusedfor
drillingahorizontalborethroughthesoilandunder
obstructionssuchasroads,buildings,bodiesofwater,
etc.Onceyoudrillthebore,youpullbacktheutility
linesorpipesthroughtheboreandconnectthem
asneeded.Becauseitdoesnotgreatlydisturbthe
surface,installingutilitiesusingdirectionaldrilling
preservestheenvironmentandsavesbothtimeand
moneyovertraditionalinstallationmethodssuchas
trenching.
Installingcablingorpipeusingadirectionaldrill
involvesthefollowingsteps:
1.Gathersiteinformation.
Beforeoperatinginanareawithhigh-voltage
linesorcables,contactaOne-CallSystem

localutilitycompany.Ifyoudonotknowyour

Beforefullyplanningthebore,gatherinformation
aboutthejobsite,suchasthelocationofother
utilities,obstaclesatthesite,andthepermits
youwillneedtocompletethejob;referto
GatheringSiteInformation(page39).
2.Planthebore.
Beforeyoudrill,plantheborepathbasedonthe
informationthatyougathered;refertoPlanning
theBorePath(page42).
3.Preparethejobsiteandthemachine.
Beforedrilling,preparethejobsitewithanentry
point,adepth-gaugehole(optional),andan
exithole.Youalsoneedtodrivetheunittothe
site,setitupfordrilling,andconnectittoa
drilling-uidmixer.
Note:Whendrilling,youconnectthemachine
toadrilling-uidmixerthatmixeswaterwith
bentoniteclayandotheringredients.The
