4.Drillthebore.
Youdrilltheborein3stages:
A.Entry
Intheentryphaseofthebore,youpushthe
drillbitandheadintothegroundatanangle
ofupto16degrees.Afterpushinginone
ormorepipes,youbegindrillingdownand
forwarduntilyoureachthedesireddepthor
depth-gaugehole(ifused).
B.HorizontalReach
Afterreachingthedesireddepth,you
pushthebitforward,steeringthebittoa
horizontaldepth.Thedrillbitemitsaradio
signalfromthesondehousing,whichallows
acrewmemberonthesurfacetotrackthe
locationanddepthoftheheadusingthe
sondereceiverasyoudrillandsteeritalong
aplannedroute.
C.Exit
Onceyouhaveattainedtheplanned
horizontalreach,yousteertheheadupat
ananglesimilartoyourentryanglebringing
thebitintotheexitholeortrench.

5.Backreamtheboreandpullbackcablingor
pipe.
Afterenteringtheexithole,theendcrew
detachesthedrillbitandsondehousingfrom
thedrillpipe.Initsplace,theyattachareaming
bitandtheendofthecableorpipetobepulled
throughthebore.Thereamingbitisdesignedto
enlargetheboreasyoupullitback.Asbefore,
youpumpdrillinguidthroughthepipetothe
reamingbitasyoupullthecableorpipeback
throughtheboretolubricatethereamerand
allowthecableorpipetoslideeasilythrough
thebore.Youcontinuepullingthepipeback
untilthereamerreachesthedepth-gaugehole
orexitsattheentrypoint.Thereyouremovethe
reamerandproductfromthedrillpipe,pulling
thepipetherestofthewaybacktothemachine.

6.Finishtheboreandleavethejobsite.
Aftercompletingtheoperation,youneedto
disconnectandcleanthemachineandloaditon
thetrailer;refertoFinishingtheJob(page66).

PlanningtheInitialRoute
Beforeyoucanbeginboring,youneedtoplanthe
routethatyouwillboreandprepareasfollows:
Createabasicplanforthebore,mappingoutthe
proposedroute.
Noteanyobstacleswhichmayaffectthebore,
suchaslargetrees,bodiesofwater,buildings,
etc.
Plantherouteoftheboretoavoidasmany
obstaclesaspossible.
Determinethedepthofanybodiesofwaterto
becrossedtoensurethatyoucangetdeep
enoughunderthem.
Determinethedepththatyouneedtoinstallthe
materialatandtheminimumbendradiusbothof
thedrillpipeandofthematerialbeinginstalled.
Thiswillseriouslyaffecthowlongtheboreneeds
tobeandatwhatanglethatyoucanbeginand
end;refertoPlanningtheBorePath(page42).
Havetheareaoftheboremarkedforutilitylines(in
theUScall811).Ensurethatalllinesaremarked
onyourblueprints/boreplanaswell.
Contactthelocalauthoritiestoarrangeforany
permitsandtrafccontrolthatyouwillneedto
conductthejob.
InspectingtheProposedJobSite
Physicallyinspectthesiteasfollows:
Notetheterrain,slopes,valleys,hills,andany
featuresnotplannedforpreviously.
Determinethedegreeofslopeatboththe
proposedentrypointandexitpoint.
Determinewhatthesoiltypesareintheareaand,
ifpossible,atthedepththatyouwillbeboring.
Youmayneedtodigtestholesatintervalsalong
theborepathtofullydeterminethis.
Walktheareaofthebore,lookingforanypossible
unmarkedobstructions.Lookformanholes,
pedestals,oldfoundations,etc.
Identifyallthehazardsthatyouwillpasswithin
3m(10ft).
