Contactingundergroundhazardswiththe
machinewhiledrillingorreamingcan

problems,severetrauma,anddeathtoyou
orbystanders.
–Ensurethatallpersonnelatthejobsite
wearpersonalprotectiveequipment
includingahardhat,eyeprotection,
electricallyinsulatedsafetybootsand
gloves,andhearingprotection.
–Keepbystandersandspectatorsaway
fromthejobsite,includingthecomplete
borepath.
–Locateandexposeallelectricandgas
linesthatyouwillbecrossingbycareful
handdigging.
–EnsurethatyouusetheZap-Alert
systemwheneveryouoperatethe
machine.
Commonhazardsincludethefollowing:
–Gaslines

Drillingintoagaslinecancausean
explosionorre,burning,injuring,or
killingyouorothersinthevicinityof
thebreak.
◊Donotsmokeorhaveanysourceof
ameneargaslinesorateitherend
ofaborethatwillbecrossingagas
line.
◊Keepbystandersandspectators
awayfromthejobsite,includingthe
completeborepath.
◊Locateandexposeallgaslinesthat
youwillbecrossingbycarefulhand
digging.
◊Havethegascompanyturnoffthe
gastoanylinesyouwillbecrossing
beforedrilling.
◊Usethereceivertotracktheexact
positionofthedrillheadwhen
approachinggaslines.
–Electricalpowerlines

electriedandmayelectrocuteyouor
anybystanders.

◊Beforedrilling,setupandusethe
Zap-alertsystemwhichisdesigned
tonotifyinthecaseofanelectric
strikeandelectricallyisolatethe
machineoperatorfromthemachine.
IftheZap-alertalarmtriggers,
stopwhatyouaredoinganddo
notleavetheoperator’sposition.
