Boreentry
Thisiswhereyousetupthemachineandthedrill
bitenterstheground.Dependingonconditions,
thiswilltypicallybesetback9to15m(30to50ft)
fromthebeginning-of-the-bore-at-depthpoint.
Beginning-of-bore-at-depthpoint
Thisisthepointwhereyouwanttheutilityline
orpipetoendafterinstallationiscomplete.Itis
typicallythepointatwhichtheborelevelsout
andbeginstoborehorizontally.Thismaybethe
sameastheentrypoint,oryoumaydigaseparate
depth-gaugeholeatthispoint(Figure27).
Boredepth
Thisthedepthatwhichyouwanttoinstalltheutility
lineorpipe.Thismachineisdesignedprimarilyfor
installationsbetween1and3m(3.5to10ft).
Obstaclesinthepath
Itisimportanttoknowwheretheknownobstacles
arethatyouwillneedtosteeraroundorunder
beforestartingsothatyoucanplanwheretobegin
steeringpriortoreachingtheobstacle.
End-of-bore-at-depthpoint
Thisisthepointwhereyouwanttheutilitylineor
pipetobeginafterinstallationiscomplete.Often,
thiswillalsobetheboreexit.
Boreexit
Thisisthelocationwherethedrillheadwillexit
thegroundandthepointatwhichyouwillpullthe
utilitylinesorpipeintothebore.Ifthispointwill
beatthesurfaceinsteadofatinstallationdepth,
youwillneedtodeterminethedistancefromthe
end-of-bore-at-depthlocationneededforsteering
thedrilltothesurface,typically9to15m(30to50
ft)fromtheend-of-the-bore-at-depthpoint.
DeterminingtheBore-EntryPoint
Oneofthemorechallengingaspectsofplanningthe
borepathistodeterminetheentrypointofthebore.
Youneedtotakethefollowingtraitsintoaccountwhen
determiningthelocationoftheentrypoint:
Boredepth
Thisisthedepthatwhichyouwanttoinstall
theutilitylineorpipe.Thismachineisdesigned
primarilyforinstallationsbetween1and3m(3.5
to10ft).
Pipeandmaterialexibility
The3m(10ft)pipesusedonthismachinecan
extoan8%pitchoverthelengthofthepipe;
thisequatestoabendofnomorethan20cm(8
inches)offastraightpath(Figure28).
Important:Ifyousteerthepipetobend
sharperthan20cm(8inches)perpipe,you
maydamagethepipesandtheirconnections.
Youmustalsomakesteeringchanges
graduallyovertheentirelengthofeachpipe.
Ifyousteerthewhole20cm(8inches)in
only25to50cm(1to2ft)oftravel,youwill
permanentlydamagethepipes.
