TestingtheZap-Alert
System
TheZap-Alertsystemisanelectricstrikesensing
deviceonthemachinethattriggersastrobelightand
audiblealarmintheeventthatthedrillbit,reamer,
orstakebreaksintoanenergizedpowerline.Inthe
eventofanelectricstrike,themachinewillbecome
energized,settingoffthealarm.
DANGER
IftheZap-alertsystemactivateswhiledrilling,
themachine,exceptfortheoperatorplatform,
willbecomeenergized.Ifyoustepoffthe
operatorplatformorifsomeonetouchesthe
machineorwetgroundnearthemachine
orinthebore,youortheonewhotouched
themachinecouldbeelectrocuted,causing
seriousinjuryordeath.
TesttheZap-alertsystembeforedrilling.
Deploythegroundingstakebeforedrilling.
Ensurethatthestakeisfullyinsertedinto
moistsoil.
IftheZap-alertistriggered:
Stayintheseatanddonottouchthe
groundoranyotherpartofthemachine
untilthepowerhasbeenturnedoff.
Donotpourliquidsorurinatefromthe
operatorplatformontotheground.
Stopdrilling,stopthedrilling-uidow,
andretractthedrilloutoftheground.
Keepeveryoneawayfromthemachine.
Keepstandingorrunningwaterand
drillinguidcontainedclosetothe
machine.Keepwateranddrillinguid
sourcesawayfromthebrokenline.
Contacttheutilitycompanytohave
powershutofftothebrokenline.Do
notresettheZap-alertsystemuntilthe
powerhasbeenturnedoff.
TesttheZap-alertsystembeforeusingthedrilleach
day,asfollows:
1.Openthefronthood.
2.Laythegroundingstakeatonthegroundaway
fromthemachine.Donotdrivethestakeinto
theground.
Important:Donotallowthestaketotouch
anypartofthemachine.
3.ConnectanalligatorclipfromtheZap-alert
testertothegroundingstudontheZap-alert
system(Figure33).
