SteeringtheDrillHead
Thedrillbitisshapedlikeawedge,angledfromone
sideofthebittotheother.Whenyoupushthebit
throughthesoilwithoutrotatingit,itwillveertoward
thedirectionthewedgeispointing.Whenyourotate
thepipeanddrillhead,itboresthroughthesoilina
straightpath.

Whendrilling,thereceiveroperatorfollowsthedrill
headasitprogresses.Thereceiverreceivessignals
fromthesondeinthedrillheadidentifyingitsposition,
depth,pitch,direction,transmittertemperature,and
orientationinthesoil.Theremoteconsoleisascreen
thatremainsnearyou(thedrilloperator)toshowyou
theinformationfromthereceiverwhiledrillingsothat
youcanmakesteeringdecisions.
Fordetailedinformationonusingthereceiverand
remoteconsoletoguidethedrillhead,refertothe
Operator’sManualthatcamewithyourreceiver.
Important:Donotsteerthedrillheadmorethan
20cm(8inches)offcenterforevery3m(10ft)of
forwardtravel.Ifyousteermorethanthis,youwill
damagethedrillpipes.
BoringtheHorizontalShaft
Aftercreatingtheentryshaft,yougraduallysteer
thedrillheadupwhilepushingforward,following
theplannedborepath.Whenyoureachthedesired
depth,leveloutthedrillheadandborethehorizontal
shaft,addingpipesasyougo.Whileboring,payclose
attentiontotheinformationrelayedbacktoyouby
thereceiveroperatoraboutthestatusandlocation
ofthedrillheadtoensurethatyouarefollowingthe
plannedpath.
Important:Whiledrilling,watchthesonde
temperature.Allsondeshaveamaximum
temperature,abovewhichtheywillbedamaged.
Frictionbetweenthedrillheadandthesoil
willcausethetemperaturetoraise.Toreduce
thetemperature,slowdown,decreaseforward
pressure,andincreasethedrilling-uidow.If
thedrillheadisenteringasoiltypeotherthan
whatitisdesignedfor,thatcanalsoraisethe
temperature.Assessthesituationandpulloutthe
drillheadandchangeitifnecessary.
Ifyourunintoanobstruction,dothefollowing:
1.Increasetheowofthedrillinguidforafew
secondswithoutdrilling,thenattempttocontinue
drillingforward.
Note:Thismayloosentheobstructionand
allowyoutopushpastit.
2.Iftheobstructionpersists,tryoneormoreofthe
followingoptions:
Iftheobstructionisinanareawhereyou
candig,stopthedrillheadwiththeExitSide
Lockoutanddigdowntotheobstructionto
identifyitandremoveitifpossible.
Pullthedrillheadback15m(50ft)ormore
andsteerthedrillheadtotheside,marking
anewdrillpatharoundtheobstacle.
Important:Donotsteerthedrillhead
morethan20cm(8inches)offcenterfor
every3m(10ft)offorwardtravel.Ifyou
steermorethanthis,youwilldamagethe
drillpipes.
Iftheobstructionisactuallyachangeinsoil
type,suchasazoneofrockysoil,pullthe
drillheadallthewaybackandchangetoa
drillbitappropriatefordrillingthroughthe
newsoiltype.
ExitingtheGround
Asyouapproachtheendofthebore,steerthedrill
headtotheexitpoint,keepingthesteeringlimitsin
mindasyoudoso.Beforeexitingtheground,ensure
thateveryoneisawayfromtheexitpoint.Assoonas
youbreakthrough,stopthedrilling-uidow.Extend
thedrillforwarduntiltheentiredrillheadisoutofthe
ground.
BackreamingandPullback
Afterdrillingtheinitialbore,youattachareamerto
thepipe,whichisthenconnectedtoatheproductthat
youareinstalling.Thereamerisdesignedtowiden
thebore,packthewalls,andlubricatethepassageof
theproductintothebore.
Thefollowingreamersareavailablefromyour
AuthorizedToroDealerinvarioussizestomeetyour
needsandsoilconditions:
Carbidestep-wingcutter—Usethisreamerin
sandyandmediumclaysoilconditionstomixthe
drillinguidwiththesoil,makingamixturethat
owseasilyaroundtheproductbeingpulled.
Castconepacker—Usethisreamerinsoilsthat
packeasily,suchassoftclay,peat,andloam,to
