Usingthecorrecttrenchercomponentshelpstoincrease
thetrenchingspeedandextendingthelifeofthetrencher.

SelectingtheProperChain
Itisimportanttohavethecorrectchainforthejob.The
soilconditionswilldeterminethetypeofchainthathasthe
strengthandtensionthatyouneed.Achainthatistoolight
wearsfastorbreaks;achainthatistooheavyincreasesthe
loadonthemachineandreducesthetrencherdiggingspeed;
however,aheavychainhasalongerwearlifethanalighter
chain.
Important:Maintainthecorrectchaintension.Ifthe
chainistootightortooloose,thediggingefciency
decreasesandthepartswearmorequickly.
Note:Trencherchainsareratedbytheirtensilestrength;for
example,a22,680kg(50,000lb)chaintakesaminimumof
22,680kg(50,000lb)ofpulltobreakthechain.
SelectingtheProperDiggingTeeth
Themostimportantcomponentsofthetrencherarethe
diggingteeth;thetypeofteeththatyouselectandthe
arrangementofteeththatyouusegreatlyaffectsthedigging
efciencyandtoothwear.
1.Choosetheteeth(cupped,rockandfrostcarbide
cutters,oracombinationofboth).
2.Choosethetoothwidthandarrangement.
TypesofDiggingTeeth
Thetypesofdiggingteethareasfollows:
•Cuppedteeth(Figure37)arethebestforcutting
throughlighttomediumsoil.Thecuppeddesignofthe
toothcutsthroughthesoilandthenmovesitupandout
ofthetrench.

ArrangementsofDiggingTeeth
Thearrangementofdiggingteethinvolvesbothwhereand
howeachtoothisattachedtothediggingchain.Usethe
followingguidelineswhenyouselectthearrangementsof
teeth:
•Installteeththatarethesamewidthandarespaced
equallyaroundthechain.
•Usefewerteethonthechainwhenyouareoperatingthe
trencherinwetclayorgumbo.
•Usemoreteethonthechainwhenyouareoperatingthe
trencherinsandyloamorrockyground.
