Subject: Effects of loose fasteners and engine vibration in drive system.
If a unit shows visual symptoms of vibration, fails a drive system component, or has a
metal fatigue failure, inspect the unit carefully for loose fasteners/misalignment and
proper engine speed settings.
Note: General symptoms of a unit with excess vibration can be visually identified by a
rapid shaking of the steering column and air cleaner intake tube.
Inspect the engine mounts, hydrostat drive couplings, hydrostat, front axle, and PTO
drive system components for loose fasteners. Tighten any loose items found. Loose
fasteners can create misalignment during operation as the components shift position
under load.
If the idle speed setting is below 1500 rpm, the engine can create excess vibration. The
engines used in this application tend to have a natural harmonic vibration at or around
1500 rpm. If vibration is noted at the steering tower and air cleaner intake tube when
idling, the condition can be improved by experimenting with the idle setting. The idle
setting may be adjusted anywhere between 1500 and 1650 rpm to find the speed where
the vibration is the least. The correct full throttle setting is 3150-3250 rpm.
