Awornordamagedbladecanbreak,andapiece
ofthebladecouldbethrownintotheoperator’s
orbystander’sarea,resultinginseriouspersonal
injuryordeath.
Inspectthebladeperiodicallyforwearor
damage.
Neverweldabrokenorcrackedblade.
Alwaysreplaceawornordamagedblade.
InspectingandSharpeningthe
Blade
1.Raisethecuttingdecktothehighestposition,shutthe
engineoff,andengagetheparkingbrake.Blockthe
cuttingdecktopreventitfromfallingaccidentally.On
theGroundsmaster3500-Dand3500-G,securethe
cuttingdeckservicelatch.
2.Examinethecuttingendsofthebladecarefully,
especiallywheretheatandcurvedpartsoftheblade
meet(Figure15).Sincesandandabrasivematerialcan
wearawaythemetalthatconnectstheatandcurved
partsoftheblade,checkthebladebeforeusingthe
machine.Ifwearisnoticed(Figure15),replacethe
blade;refertoRemovingtheCutterBlade.

Ifthebladeisallowedtowear,aslotwillform
betweenthesailandatpartoftheblade
(Figure15).Eventuallyapieceoftheblade
maybreakoffandbethrownfromunderthe
housing,possiblyresultinginseriousinjuryto
yourselforbystanders.
Inspectthebladeperiodicallyforwearor
damage.
Alwaysreplaceawornordamagedblade.

3.Inspectthecuttingedgesofallblades.Sharpenthe
cuttingedgesiftheyaredullornicked.Sharpenonly
thetopofthecuttingedgeandmaintaintheoriginal
cuttingangletomakesureofsharpness(Figure16).
Thebladewillremainbalancedifthesameamountof
metalisremovedfrombothcuttingedges.

4.Tocheckthebladeforbeingstraightandparallel,lay
thebladeonalevelsurfaceandcheckitsends.The
endsoftheblademustbeslightlylowerthanthecenter,
andthecuttingedgemustbelowerthantheheelofthe
blade.Thisbladewillproducegoodqualityofcutand
requireminimalpowerfromtheengine.Bycontrasta
bladethatishigherattheendsthanthecenter,orif
cuttingedgeishigherthantheheel,thebladeisbentor
warpedandmustbereplaced.
5.Installtheblade,sailfacingtowardcuttingdeck,with
theanti-scalpcupandbladebolt.Tightentheblade
boltto85–110ft-lb(115–149N-m).

Time
ServiceInterval:Beforeeachuseordaily
Thebladesofthecuttingdeckshouldcometoacomplete
stopinapproximately5secondsafteryoushutdownthe
cuttingdeckengagementswitch.
Note:Makesurethedecksareloweredontoacleansection
ofturforhardsurfacetoavoidthrowndustanddebris.
Toverifythisstoppingtime,haveasecondpersonstandback
fromthedeckatleast20feet(6m)andwatchtheblades
ononeofthecuttingdecks.Havetheoperatorshutthe
cuttingdecksdownandrecordthetimeittakesfortheblades
tocometoacompletestop.Ifthistimeisgreaterthan7
seconds,thebrakingvalveneedsadjustment.CallyourToro
Distributorforassistanceinmakingthisadjustment.
ServicingtheFrontRoller
Inspectthefrontrollerforwear,excesswobble,orbinding.
Serviceorreplacetherollerorcomponentsifanyofthese
conditionsexist.
DisassemblingtheFrontRoller
1.Removetherollermountingbolt(Figure17).
