DANGER
Awornordamagedbladecanbreak,anda
pieceofthebladecouldbethrowntowardyou
orbystanders,resultinginseriouspersonal
injuryordeath.
Inspectthebladeperiodicallyforwearor
damage.
Donottrytostraightenabladethatisbent.
Donotweldabrokenorcrackedblade.
Replaceawornordamagedbladewitha
newTorobladetoensurecontinuedsafety
certicationoftheproduct.
Bothcuttingedgesandthesail,whichistheturned
upportionoppositethecuttingedge,contributetoa
goodquality-of-cut.Thesailisimportantbecauseit
pullsgrassupstraight,therebyproducinganeven
cut.However,thesailwillgraduallyweardown
duringoperation,andthisconditionisnormal.As
thesailwearsdown,thequality-of-cutwilldegrade
somewhat,althoughthecuttingedgesaresharp.
Thecuttingedgeoftheblademustbesharpsothat
thegrassiscutratherthantorn.Adullcuttingedge
isevidentwhenthetipsofthegrassappearbrown
andshredded.Sharpenthecuttingedgestocorrect
thiscondition.
1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurface.Raisethe
cuttingunit,engagetheparkingbrake,putthe
tractionpedalinneutral,putthePTOleverinthe
OFFposition,shutofftheengine,andremove
thekey.
2.Examinethecuttingendsofthebladecarefully,
especiallywheretheatandcurvedpartsof
theblademeet(Figure32).Sincesandand
abrasivematerialcanwearawaythemetalthat
connectstheatandcurvedpartsoftheblade,
checkthebladebeforeusingthemachine.Ifyou
seewear(Figure32),replacetheblade;referto
RemovingandInstallingtheBlade(s)(page21).

WARNING
Ifthebladeisallowedtowear,aslot
willformbetweenthesailandatpart
oftheblade(Figure32).Eventually,a
pieceoftheblademaybreakoffandbe
thrownfromunderthehousing,possibly
resultinginseriousinjurytoyourselfor
bystanders.
Inspectthebladeperiodicallyforwear
ordamage.
Replaceawornordamagedbladewith
anewTorobladetoensurecontinued
safetycerticationoftheproduct.
3.Examinethecuttingedgesofallblades.
Sharpenthecuttingedgesiftheyaredullor
nicked.Sharpenonlythetopsideofthecutting
edgeandmaintaintheoriginalcuttingangleto
ensuresharpness(Figure33).Thebladewill
remainbalancedifthesameamountofmetalis
removedfrombothcuttingedges.

Aftersharpeningthecuttingedges,installthe
bladewiththeanti-scalpcupandbladebolt.The
bladesailsmustbeontopoftheblade.Tighten
thebladeboltto115to149m(85to110ft-lb).
