Keeping Engine Compartment Clear of Debris
Product: GM5900 December 4, 2009
Affected Units:
Models:
31598
31599
Serial Numbers:
280000101 - UP
280000101 - UP
Situation:
Depending upon the operating conditions, chaff and debris may accumulate in certain areas in
and around the engine area under the hood of Toro Groundsmaster products. As this debris
accumulates, there is always the possibility that it may come in contact with hot surfaces such
as the exhaust manifold, turbocharger, muffler, etc. Chaff buildup around hydraulic components
can “insulate” them and not allow the component to receive adequate air circulation for cooling.
Buildup of chaff and debris can become soaked with water from rain or machine cleaning and
can corrode or rust metal surfaces in the area under and around the accumulated chaff. If the
wet chaff is sitting on electrical connectors, the moisture can wick its way into connectors and
corrode terminals.
Instructions:
Cleaning chaff and debris from around the engine area is a good maintenance practice that
must be completed on a periodic basis. The frequency of the cleaning will depend upon the
amount of product use and mowing conditions. As the engine oil is checked at the start of each
day, a quick look around the engine compartment and subsequent cleaning (as required) should
be performed.
Safety Awareness:
A collection of chaff and debris in and around the area described may ignite if allowed to
accumulate close to the muffler or exhaust manifold; this could lead to potential personal injury.
