Clean commu-
tator surface with sandpaper. Measure the commu-
tator outside diameter at several points.
If
the differ-
ence of the outside diameter is not as specified in
Dimensionsand Clearances,
correct the commuta-
tor on a lathe to
factory
specifications.
If
the mini-
mum outside diameter is less than the allowable
limit, replace the armature.

mica

dercut depth.
If
the undercut
is
less than that speci-
fied in
Dimensions

Clearances,
use a saw
blade to increase the depth and then chamfer the
segment edges.

Inspection:

Check for conti-
nuity across the starter body and brushes. There
are four brushes in the starter body. The
two
that are
not grounded are
180"
apart starting at the terminal
which connects to the solenoid. The
two
that are
grounded are located
90"
from the non-grounded
terminals.
If
continuity exists at the non-grounded
terminals, replace the starter
body.
If
continuity
does not exist at the grounded terminals, replace
the starter
body.
