UK DECLARATION OF CONFORMITY according to the Directive 89/392/EC We, Kverneland Nieuw-Vennep BV, Hoofdweg 1278, NL-2153 LR Nieuw-Vennep declare under our sole responsibility that the product pendulum spreader, type PS 203-503 to which this declaration relates satisfies the following standards and technical specifications: EN292-2, EN294 according to the stipulations of the Directives 89/392/EC and 91/368/EC. Nieuw-Vennep, January 1st, 2002 .......................
GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Vicon SuperFlow fertiliser spreader can be used for spreading granulated fertilisers, powders, cereals and seeds. The PS 203-503 are mounted on the hydraulic three-point linkage of the tractor. A set of wheels is optionally available for all these models. All spreaders are pto shaft driven. The supplied coupling shaft is fitted with a slipping clutch which prevents overload when the pto shaft is switched on.
PREFACE In this instruction manual we will explain how to use and maintain the PS pendulum spreader. It contains information about the adjustment and maintenance and gives directions for trouble shooting. Read the instructions and safety regulations before you begin to work with your machine! Make sure that this manual is made available for those working with the spreader.
SAFETY REGULATIONS DANGER: If you come across this symbol and heading, there is a direct hazard to life and health of man and animal. ATTENTION: This heading refers to possible risks of damage to machine(s), crops, buildings, etc., but also to possible financial and/or legal problems (warranty, liability, and the like). NOTE: This indicates a tip to make the work easier, better and safer.
25. 26. 27. 28. 29. 30. 31. 32. 33. The linkage category of the spreader must always correspond with that of the tractor; adapt the machine if necessary! There is a danger of accidents by crushing or jackknifing inherent to using the three-point linkage. The controls for the three-point linkage outside the tractor cab must be operated without standing between the tractor and the spreader. Always make sure of sufficient lateral fixation of a machine in transport position.

DANGER STICKER-EXPLANATION TEXTS Stop the engine and prevent any starting up when working on the machine. In this way you will prevent the perilous situations arising when a machine suddenly starts running. Also think of accidental engaging if the engine should remain running! Keep clear: objects may be flung away! Remember that fertiliser granules are flung away to the rear and to the sides. Therefore always remain clear of the danger zone.

PACKING AND ASSEMBLY ASSEMBLY SEQUENCE For reasons of easy transport the spreader has been delivered as compact as possible. The frame The spreader is assembled from the following subassemblies: S S S S S S S frame spreading mechanism hopper (with optional extension) spreading spout control lever, hydraulic or electric control regulating rod coupling shaft When the optional agitator has been supplied, we recommend to mount it only when spreading powders or humid fertilisers.
The nylon regulating rod Agitator set (option) S Turn the metering disc (1) of the spreading unit (5) so that it is closed and push the nylon regulating rod (2) into the "keyhole" (3). S Then push the metering disc back against the stop (4). If the spreader has been delivered with an agitator set (for spreading powder or humid fertilisers), the standard agitator can remain in place. The spreading mechanism The spreading unit (5) is mounted on the frame with four bolts M12 and self-locking nuts.
Hydraulic remote control (option) Particularly for trailed spreaders or for tractors with a closed cab, the hydraulic remote control is a useful device. You can close the metering disc with the aid of the single-acting tipper connection of the tractor. It opens automatically under gas pressure as soon as you remove the hydraulic pressure. We recommend to install the hydraulic remote control before the manual control lever and the hopper are mounted. S Mount the fixing bracket (1) on the regulator plate.
The coupling shaft Hopper - PS 403/503 S First remove any paint or burrs and mount the coupling shaft with the M10 socket head bolt (1) as shown. S Do not tighten the nut yet, because you may have to adopt the coupling shaft length. S Apply vaseline or grease on the rubber tighteners (9) and place them in the hopper. S Mount the extension (10) on the hopper using the nut on the underside of the hopper edge.
The spreading spout The spreading spout of the SuperFlow spreaders is fitted with a fastener, enabling quick mounting and dismounting of the spout. ATTENTION: Test run for about one minute after mounting the spreading spout. Then check the torque of the bolts again (80 Nm / 60 ft-lbs) and check that the spout and band are perfectly straight. Mounting/Dismounting Mounting the rubber lining (for spreading powder fertilisers): S Insert the bolts (1) with washer (2) through the aluminium ring (3).
TRACTOR REQUIREMENTS As a rule every tractor with a hydraulic three point linkage is suited to mount the spreader. It is important to have a correctly functioning top link adjustment (1) and a height adjustment on one of the linkage arms (2). If your spreader is fitted with a hydraulic remote control, a tipper valve on the tractor is required. The spreaders are supplied with Cat. I ¢ 22mm (5) and Cat. II N 28 mm (only PS 403/503) (6) link pins.
HITCHING TO THE TRACTOR In the standard version the fertiliser spreader is directly connected to the three point linkage of the tractor. S First connect the top link to the spreader. S Connect the spreader to the linkage arms of the tractor. If the balls of the linkage arms are exchangeable, always use the correct category. S Lift the spreader a little using the power lift. Then the top link can easily be connected tot he tractor.
COUPLING SHAFT CONNECTION INSPECTION OF THE SLIPPING CLUTCH To determine the length of the coupling shaft the spreader must be hitched to the tractor. Some tractors have a pto brake which is actuated rather abruptly or a hydraulic pto. Therefore a coupling shaft with a slipping clutch is a standard feature. Regularly, and in any case at the beginning of the spreading season, inspect the operation of the slipping clutch in the coupling shaft.
OVERLAPPING A TRIANGULAR SPREADING PATTERN VARYING THE WORKING WIDTH The SuperFlow spreaders have a symmetrical, triangular spreading pattern (1); from the centre to the left and to the right the quantities of fertiliser spread are exactly the same (2). Here the dotted line (4) indicates the optimum fertiliser coverage at full overlap. In practice this line will not be exactly horizontal, but there will be "peaks and dips".
Example Coefficient of Variation (CV): S A certain fertiliser type has an optimum working width of 11 metres (36 ft) (4). Then the CV is e.g. 7% (maximum permissible CV is 15%). S When spreading at e.g. 13 metres (43 ft), the spreading patterns shift apart a little (5). Then the CV is 9%, so still within the standard. S At a lower track spacing, e.g. 9 metres (30 ft), the spreading patterns close up more (6). Then the CV is 10%. So the working width is determined by the chosen track spacing.
SETTING THE FERTILISER QUANTITY (up to 15 metres / 49 ft) In order to determine the correct setting of the regulating rod, the following values must be established first: S S S S spreading width application rate driving speed fertiliser type Suppose you want to spread NPK 12.10.18 at a width of 14 metres (44 ft), at a rate of 285 kg/ha and a driving speed of 10 km/hour (6 mph). In the spreading table you can find the minimum and maximum spreading width for NPK 12.10.
(5) Find at the top of the spreading table on your hopper (5) (or on page 23 of this manual) what position corresponds with an application rate of 66 kg/min NPK 12.10.18 (6) Immediately over the number 66 the position of the regulating rod is indicated: position 48. (7) Adjust the regulating nut of the regulating rod to position 48.
CALIBRATION TEST The spreading tables at the back of your manual have been determined in the Vicon test hall by means of the most modern equipment. Practical circumstances and fertiliser, however, will always be different from the test situation in which Vicon has determined the values for the spreading tables. A calibration test will enable you to detect and, if necessary, correct any differences in fertiliser and application rate.
S Put the regulating rod on position 48 (3) and close the metering disc (4). S Fill the hopper up 50% of its maximum capacity (5). S Adjust the pto shaft speed to the correct rpm (6). (9-14 m: 540 rpm, 15 m: 620 rpm. S Open the metering disc (7) and leave it open exactly one minute (8). Reduce the calibrationtime to 30 seconds when large quantities can be expected. Multiply the outcome with two. S Close the metering disc (9) and weigh the collected quantity. If that is 66 kg, the setting is correct.
CALCULATION KG/MIN CALCULATION KG/HA If you want to spread a type of fertiliser not included in the table you can easily calculate the application rate in kg/min yourself with the following formula: If you want to spread a type of fertiliser not included in the table you can easily calculate the application rate in Kg/ha by means of the tray test result and the following formula: kg/ha × km/h × working width 600 kg/min x working width x Example: Fertiliser Kg/ha Working width Speed Example: 10 metres
SPREADING S Close the metering disc before filling the hopper (1). S Switch off the pto shaft (2). S Only load the fertiliser into the hopper shortly before spreading to prevent 'settlement'. S Check the height of the spreading spout once more on the field; low tramlines may reduce the distance between the spout and the field too much (3). In that case it will suffice to slightly shorten the top link. The spout height should be 75 cm above ground level (4).
ONE-SIDED SPREADING With the standard spreader: For spreading along ditches or other field borders the pto speed can be reduced to 400 rpm. Reduce the height of the spreading spout to 50 cm above the crop. Then you spread over a narrower strip and the fertiliser does not end up in the ditch or on the neighbouring field. With the aid of the slide calculator you can calculate half the fertilizer application rate and set it with the regulating rod.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ONE-SIDED SPREADING With the one-sided spreading plate on the Vicon SuperFlow Pendulum spreader hardly any fertiliser will end up across the field border when spreading at 3m (10 ft) from the field border. To spread the fertiliser as evenly as possible up to the field border when working with the onesided spreading plate, you should lower the pto speed (370 rpm) and reduce the application rate by 50% at least (30 to 50% of full-field application rate).
27
POWDER SPREADING We recommend to proceed as follows for accurate spreading of powder fertilisers: S S Remove the spreading spout and place the special rubber lining (1). Mount the agitator crown (acc.) (4) with the lock ring (6) (see also page 10). When a windshield (acc.) is used, the spreading width will determine the pto rpm (2). A too high rpm causes a too high application at the end of the windshield (3). So in that case the correct rpm is highly important.
SPREADING SALT AND GRIT If you want to spread salt or grit at a fixed working width, you should use the special salt and grit spouts in combination with a grit insert and an agitator. Use spout PS000SG2 (2) for a working width of 2-4 m (6-13 ft) and spout PS000SG5 (1) for a working width of 5-6 m (16-19 ft). For these two salt and grit spouts the height of the spout above the ground must be 75 cm.
WORKING WITH THE FINE METERING SET Setting the application rate for the fine metering set: The fine metering set shuts off two out of the three metering openings for accurate and effortless spreading at a low output (in kg/min). That could for instance be spreading: S Determine the discharge in kg/min for the desired application (A). S Use the slide rule for that purpose (1). S Multiply the discharge (in kg/min) by a factor 3. Read out the connected metering position (B) and set it.
MAINTENANCE Apart from the usual lubrication and cleaning the VICON spreader hardly requires any maintenance. DANGER: When working on the machine ALWAYS stop the tractor engine. Make sure that when working on a lifted machine, the machine is protected from lowering. Only the spreading band of the spreading spout (7) requires occasional replacement. Thousands of kilos of fertiliser are distributed by this spreading band, which inevitably causes wear (8).
LUBRICATION Lubricate the spreader after every 10 working hours.
CLEANING GENERAL: Before cleaning always grease all grease points. After cleaning grease all points again, as this will considerably increase the service life of your spreader.
ACCESSORIES 1. Vicontrol This is the electronic measuring, control and metering system. Ease of use and accuracy will both increase when you work with this accessory. A correct application, independent of the forward speed, will result in savings. In addition, with the Vicontrol you have a hectare counter, remote control unit, distance meter and speedometer. 2. Comfort Control This electronic remote control unit lets you set the desired metering quantity from the tractor cab.
Special spreading spouts For special applications you can replace the standard spreading spout by one of the spreading spouts shown on the facing page. Vicon also supplies rubber linings for prevention of blockage of the spreading spout when spreading powder. One-sided spreading spout A special one-sided spreading spout is available for one-sided spreading to the left or to the right. The resulting asymmetrical spreading pattern gives an optimum spreading border.
TORQUES Directions for torques (in Nm) for self-locking nuts, hexagonal bolts and nuts. The lowest value is for cast iron, hardened surfaces, greasy threads etc. Quality 4.6 8.8 10.9 12.
TROUBLE SHOOTING TABLE Problem Cause Incorrect metering setting / no calibration test Incorrect application per hectare Forward speed too high or too low Much dust during spreading Solution Page Always check the metering setting by means of calibration tests 21 Check the speedometer or the speed sensor 24 Track spacing incorrect Always set out tracks before spreading. 17 Incorrect setting fine metering set Check the position of the fine metering set.
