InspectingtheBrakeShoes
andLinings
Onceamonth,conductasimplevisualinspectionof
yourbrakeshoesandlinings.
Whenabrakeshoebecomesworn,replacebothshoes
oneachbrake,andbothbrakesonthesameaxle.This
ensuresthatthebrakesremainbalanced.
Replacethebrakeliningswhentheyare
wornto1/16inch(1.6mm)orlessremaining
thickness
contaminatedwithgreaseoroil
abnormallyscoredorgouged
Note:Hairlineheatcracksarenormalinthebrake
liningsandshouldnotcauseconcern.
YearlyBrakeCleaningand
Inspection
Inspectandserviceyourelectricbrakesonceayearor
moreoftenwithheavyuseordecliningperformance
Changemagnetsandshoeswhentheybecomeworn
orscored.
Cleanthebackingplate,magnetarm,magnet,and
brakeshoeswithanautomotivebrakecleaner.
Ensurethatallpartsremovedarereplacedinthe
samebrakeanddrumassemblythattheywere
removedfrom.
Inspectthemagnetarmforanylooseorwornparts.
Checktheshoereturnsprings,theholddown
springs,andtheadjusterspringsforstretchor
deformationandreplacethemifrequired.
CAUTION
Brakedustcanbehazardoustoyourhealthif
inhaled,takeprecautionswhenservicingbrakes:
Donotcreateorbreathedust.
Donotmachine,le,orgrindthebrake
linings.
Donotusecompressedairordrybrushing
forcleaning.
Lubrication
Beforereassemblingtheelectricbrakes,applyalightlm
ofantiseizecompound,orgreasesuchas“Lubriplate,
onthe:
brakeanchorpin
actuatingarmbushingandpin
areasonthebackingplatethatareincontactwith
thebrakeshoesandmagnetleverarm
actuatingblockontheactuatingarm
Important:Donotallowgreasetocontactthe
brakelinings,drums,ormagnets.
InspectingtheMagnets
Thebrakes’electromagnetsaredesignedtoprovidethe
properinputforceandfriction.
Inspectthemagnetsregularly,andreplaceiftheybecome
unevenlyworn.Useatoolwithastraightedgetocheck
wear.
Evenifthewearisnormal,youshouldreplacethe
magnetsifanypartofthemagnetcoilisvisiblethrough
thefrictionmaterialonthemagnetface.Replacethe
magnetsinpairs(bothsidesofanaxle).
Whenreplacingthemagnets,alsoresurfacethedrum
armaturesurface.
