Fuel Safety Operation • Use extreme care in handling fuel. Fuel is extremely flammable and its vapors are explosive. Note: Determine the left and right sides of the machine from the normal operating position. • Do not refuel the machine indoors. Fill the fuel tank outdoors with extreme care. Before Operation • Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and other sources of ignition. • Do not remove the fuel cap or add fuel to a hot Before Operation Safety or running engine.
Adding Fuel Recommended Fuel Type Unleaded gasoline Minimum octane rating 87 (US) or 91 (research octane; outside the US) Ethanol No more than 10% by volume Methanol None MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether) Less than 15% by volume Oil 2-cycle oil; mixed in 50:1 fuel-to-oil ratio 4. Shake the container to mix the fuel and oil thoroughly. 5. Slowly remove the cap and add the remaining amount of fuel. room temperature mixes easier and more thoroughly than cold oil.
During Operation allow the machine to cool before unclogging, fueling, inspecting, adjusting, servicing, cleaning, or storing it. During Operation Safety • The temperature of the muffler and nearby areas may be hot enough to cause a burn. Allow the muffler and engine areas to cool before touching them.
Starting the Engine 1. 2. Operating the Auger Seat the auger tip into the earth at the location of the desired hole. DANGER Press the primer bulb until the primer hose is filled with gasoline. Allow the bulb to return to its original position between presses. There may be buried utility lines in the work area. Digging into them may cause a shock or an explosion. Note: A warm or hot engine may not require Have the property or work area marked for buried lines and do not dig in marked areas.
After Operation After Operation Safety General Safety • Shut off the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop before leaving the operating position. Disconnect the spark-plug wire (and keep it away from the plug to prevent accidental starting) and allow the machine to cool before unclogging, fueling, inspecting, adjusting, servicing, cleaning, or storing it. • Clean debris from the machine to help prevent fires. Clean up oil or fuel spills.
Maintenance • Keep all parts in good working condition. Check shear bolts, engine mounting bolts, and other bolts at frequent intervals for proper tightness to ensure that the machine is in safe working condition. Maintenance Safety • Do not attempt to repair the machine unless • Shut off the engine and wait for all moving parts you have the proper tools and instructions for disassembly, assembly, and repair of the machine. to stop before leaving the operating position.
Pre-Maintenance Procedures Engine Maintenance Preparing for Maintenance Service Interval: Before each use or daily—Check the air filter. Servicing the Air Filter 1. Move the machine to a level surface, shut off the engine, and wait for all moving parts to stop. 2. Disconnect the spark-plug wire from the spark plug. Every 20 hours—Clean the air filter. (Clean daily in extremely dusty conditions.) Every 20 hours—Replace the air filter. Yearly—Replace the air filter. 1.
Servicing the Spark Plug Checking the Spark Plug Service Interval: Every 20 hours—Check, clean, and gap the spark plug. Important: Do not clean the spark plug(s). Always replace the spark plug(s) when it has a black coating, worn electrodes, an oily film, or cracks. Yearly—Replace the spark plug. Ensure that the air gap between the center and side electrodes is correct before installing the spark plug. If you see light brown or gray on the insulator, the engine is operating properly.
Auger Maintenance Maintaining the Auger Service Interval: Every 50 hours Gear case grease capacity: 118 mL (4 fl oz) 1. Add grease only if the level of the grease is below top of the gears. Important: Do not overfill the gear case. 2. Keep all screws, nuts, and bolts tight. 3. For cold-weather operation, store the machine in a cool environment. Important: Transferring the machine from a warm place to a cold place can cause condensation, which may damage the machine. 4.
Storage E. Important: Do not store fuel containing Storage Safety stabilizer/conditioner longer than the duration recommended by the fuel-stabilizer manufacturer. • Shut off the machine and wait for all moving parts to stop before you leave the operator’s position. Disconnect the spark-plug wire, keep it away from the plug to prevent accidental starting, and allow the machine to cool before adjusting, fueling, unclogging, servicing, cleaning, or storing the machine. 5.
Troubleshooting Problem The engine does not start. The engine runs rough or floods during operation. The engine is difficult to start. Possible Cause 1. The engine switch is in the OFF position. 1. Move the switch to the ON position. 2. The spark-plug wire is loose or disconnected. 3. The spark plug is wet, pitted, fouled, or the gap is incorrect. 4. The fuel-line hose is not positioned at the bottom of the fuel tank. 2. Install the wire on the spark plug. 1. The air filter is dirty. 1.
