Charging the Hydraulic System
NOTE: When initially starting the hydraulic system with new or rebuilt components such as wheel motors,
gear pump, or lift cylinder, it is important that the hydraulic system is charged properly. Remove
the air from the system and its components to reduce the chance of damage.
IMPORTANT: Change the hydraulic uid lter when repairing or replacing the hydraulic components.
1. Park the machine on a level surface and shut off the engine.
NOTE: Ensure that all of the hydraulic connections, lines, and components are secured tightly.
NOTE: Flush and ll the hydraulic system and reservoir whenever there is a severe component failure or
the system is contaminated, see “Flushing the Hydraulic System,” chapter 7, page 7-16.
2. Ensure that the hydraulic reservoir is full. Add correct quantity of hydraulic uid if necessary. See operator’s
manual for additional information.
3. Check the traction control components for proper adjustment, binding, or damaged parts.
4. Prime the hydraulic pumps, see “Priming the Hydraulic Pumps,” chapter 7, page 7-15.
5. Raise the two drive wheels off the ground and place the jack stands under the frame to support the machine.
6. Start the engine and run it at low idle speed.
NOTE: The charge and gear pumps must pick up the hydraulic uid and ll the hydraulic system. If there
is no indication of ll in 30 seconds, shut off the engine and nd the cause.
7. After the hydraulic system starts to show the signs of ll, actuate a lift switch until the lift cylinder rod moves in
and out several times.
8. If the lift cylinder does not move after 3-5 seconds or if the pump emits abnormal sounds, shut off the engine
immediately, and nd the cause or problem. Inspect the following:
• The oil lter or suction lines are loose
• Incorrect hose routing
• Suction line is blocked
• Implement relief valve is damaged
• Gear pump is damaged
CAUTION
The machine may become unbalanced. Secure
the rear of the machine with jack stands.
