• The owner/user can prevent and is responsible for accidents or injuries occurring to himself or herself, other people or property. • Do not change the engine governor setting or overspeed the engine. • Stop on level ground, lower implements, disengage drives, engage parking brake (if provided), shut off engine before leaving the operator’s position for any reason including emptying the catchers or unclogging the chute.
• Disconnect battery or remove spark plug wire before making any repairs. Disconnect the negative terminal first and the positive last. Reconnect positive first and negative last. • Stop the engine before removing the grass catcher or unclogging the chute. • Use care when checking blades. Wrap the blade(s) or wear gloves, and use caution when servicing them. Only replace blades. Never straighten or weld them. • Watch for traffic when operating near or crossing roadways.
• Check carefully for overhead clearances (i.e. branches, doorways, electrical wires) before driving under any objects and do not contact them. DO NOT • Do not mow slopes exceeding 15 degrees. • Avoid turning on slopes. If you must turn, turn slowly and gradually downhill, if possible. • Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches, or embankments. The machine could suddenly turn over if a wheel goes over the edge of a cliff or ditch, or if an edge caves in. • Do not mow on wet grass.

Checking the Side Discharge Chute Operation Remove plastic tie holding side discharge chute up and lower into place. Think Safety First Carefully read all the safety instructions and decals in the safety section. Knowing this information could help you, your family, pets or bystanders avoid injury. Checking the Level of Mower Deck The use of protective equipment for eyes, ears, feet and head is recommended. Check the level of the deck before the machine is first put in use.
Switching Fuel Tanks 3 2 1 6 8 The unit has two fuel tanks, located on the left and right sides. Each tank connects to the fuel shut off valve in the control panel. From there a common fuel line leads to the engine (Fig. 11). 7 To use the right side fuel tank rotate the fuel shut off valve 1/4 turn to the right from the off location. This uses fuel from the right side tank only. When the right hand fuel tank is empty, move the fuel shut off valve 1/4 turn to the left from the off position.
Releasing the Parking Brake 7. After the engine starts, move the choke to off (Fig. 14). If the engine stalls or hesitates, move the choke back to on for a few seconds. Then move the throttle lever to desired setting. Repeat this as required. 1. Push forward and down on the parking brake lever to release the parking brake (Fig. 12). Understanding the Safety Interlock System Important Make sure fuel shut off valve is closed before transporting or storing machine, as fuel leakage may occur. Set parking brake before transporting. The safety interlock system is designed to prevent the engine from starting unless: Operating the Power Take Off (PTO) • You are sitting on the seat. • The parking brake is engaged. The power take off (PTO) switch engages and disengages power to the electric clutch. • The power take off (PTO) is disengaged.
Driving Backward Caution 1. Move levers to the center, un-locked position. Machine can spin very rapidly. Operator may lose control of machine and cause personal injury or damage to machine. 2. To go backward, slowly pull the motion control levers rearward (Fig. 18). To go straight, apply equal pressure to both motion control levers (Fig. 18). • Use caution when making turns. • Slow the machine down before making sharp turns.

Wheel nut and washer. Do Not Remove. Positioning the Seat Whenever you change the height-of-cut it is recommended to adjust the height of the anti-scalp rollers. The seat can move forward and backward. Position the seat where you have the best control of the machine and are most comfortable. 1.
To Push the Machine Transporting Machines 1. Disengage the power take off (PTO) and turn the ignition key to off. Move levers to neutral locked position and apply parking brake. Use a heavy–duty trailer or truck to transport the machine. Ensure that the trailer or truck has all necessary lighting and marking as required by law. Please carefully read all the safety instructions in the safety section. Knowing this information could help you, your family, pets or bystanders avoid injury. 2.
Avoid sudden acceleration when driving up a ramp and sudden deceleration when backing down a ramp. Both maneuvers can cause the unit to tip backward. 4 Warning Loading a unit onto a trailer or truck increases the possibility of backward tip–over and could cause serious injury or death. 2 5 1 • Use extreme caution when operating a unit on a ramp. • Use only a single, full width ramp; Do Not use individual ramps for each side of the unit.

Caution If you leave the key in the ignition switch, someone could accidently start the engine and seriously injure you or other bystanders. Remove the key from the ignition and disconnect the wire from the spark plug(s) before you do any maintenance. Set the wire aside so that it does not accidentally contact the spark plug. Servicing the Cutting Blades Maintain sharp blades throughout the cutting season because sharp blades cut cleanly without tearing or shredding the grass blades.

Changing the Oil Filter Removing the Spark Plug(s) Replace the oil filter every 200 hours or every other oil change. 1. Disengage the power take off (PTO) and turn the ignition key to off. Move levers to neutral locked position and apply parking brake. Remove the key. Note: Change oil filter more frequently when operating conditions are extremely dusty or sandy. 2. Pull the wire(s) off the spark plug(s) (Fig. 36).

Where to Add Grease 5. Install the fuel line onto the fuel filter. Slide the hose clamp close to the fuel filter to secure the fuel line (Fig. 39). Uneven tire pressure can cause uneven cut. Check the pressure at the valve stem after every 50 operating hours or monthly, whichever occurs first (Fig. 44). Check the tires when they are cold to get the most accurate pressure reading.

Replacing the Hydraulic Filter 5. Run the machine at low idle for 15 minutes to allow any air to purge out of the system and warm fluid. Refer to Starting and Stopping the Engine on page 19. Change the hydraulic filter: • After the first 8 operating hours. 6. Recheck the fluid level while the fluid is warm. Charging the Battery Leveling the Mower 1. Position mower on a flat surface. Stop the engine, set the parking brake, remove the key and disconnect the spark plug wire(s) from the spark plug(s). Warning Charging the battery produces gasses that can explode. 2. Check tire pressure of all four tires. If needed, adjust to 13 psi (90 kPa) Never smoke near the battery and keep sparks and flames away from battery. 3. Set anti–scalp rollers to top holes or remove them completely for this adjustment. 4.

Replacing the Grass Deflector Mercury Tilt Switch The tilt switch on this unit contains mercury, a hazardous material. Mercury that is outside a sealed container vaporizes at room temperature. The vapors are harmful. Mercury can be absorbed through the skin. Do not attempt to open or repair this switch. Warning An uncovered discharge opening could allow the lawn mower to throw objects in the operator’s or bystander’s direction and result in serious injury. Also, contact with the blade could occur.

Cleaning and Storage A. Add a petroleum based stabilizer/conditioner to fuel in the tank. Follow mixing instructions from stabilizer manufacture.
