Engine Cranks but will NOT
Start
Air lter restricted Check: clogging debris (may need to replace air
lter)
Choke Not Closed Check: choke fully closed
Electrical Issues Check: battery voltage to solenoid, low battery
voltage, spark, or ignition coils/ground
Fuel Delivery System Check: tank level, fuel lines, lter and venting or
fuel pump, carburetor
Fuel Quality Check fuel condition: age, octane, ethanol
percentage, water or other contaminants
Correct Spark Check: spark plug boot installed, ignition coil
gap, ground wire, spark plugs and plug gap
Insufcient Compression Check: leak down test, compression test,
valve(s) not seating, head gasket leaking or
worn cylinder
Engine Hard Starting/Poor
Running
Fuel Quality Check fuel condition: age, octane, ethanol
percentage, water or other contaminants
Fuel Delivery System Check: tank level, fuel lines, lter and venting or
fuel pump, carburetor
Engine Oil Check: oil level/viscosity
Electrical Check: weak battery/charging system
Spark Plug Check: incorrect gap, fouled, loose or faulty
Air Filter Check: clogging debris
Air Intake Check: system leak
Ignition Coil (Spark Test) Check: coil air gap, spark test
Choke Function Check: choke position matches cable position
RPM Check: verify engine top RPM
Governor Check: governor zero point, binding linkage
