Servicing the Spark Plug

Service Interval: Every 100 hours/yearly (whichever comes rst): Check the spark plugs

Every 200 hours/ every 2 years (whichever comes rst): Replace the spark plugs

Make sure the air gap between the center and side electrodes is correct before installing the spark plug. Use a

spark plug wrench to remove and install the spark plug. Use a gapping tool or feeler gauge to check and adjust

the air gap. Install a new spark plug if necessary.

Type: Champion RN9YC or equivalent

Air Gap: 0.030 in. (0.76 mm)

Removing the Spark Plug

1. Park the machine on a level surface, disengage the PTO, stop the engine, engage the parking brake, and

remove the key.

2. Disconnect the wire from the spark plug.

NOTE: Due to the deep recess around the spark plug, blowing out the cavity with compressed air is

usually the most effective method for cleaning. The spark plug is most accessible when the

blower housing is removed for cleaning.

Checking the Spark Plug

1. Inspect the spark plug.

NOTE: If light brown or gray coating is noticeable on the insulator, the engine is working properly. A black

coating on the insulator usually means the air cleaner is dirty.

NOTE: Do NOT clean the spark plug(s). Always replace the spark plug(s) when it has: a black coating,

worn electrodes, an oily lm or cracks.

2. Check the gap between the center and side electrodes (Figure 11).

3. Set the gap to 0.030 in. (0.76 mm).
