Troubleshooting
Problem Possible Cause Next Step...
The starter does not crank The blade control switch (PTO) is
engaged.
Move the blade-control switch (PTO)
to the disengaged position.
The parking brake is not engaged. Set the parking brake.
The motion-control levers are not in
the Neutral-Lock position.
Ensure that the motion-control levers
are in the Neutral-Lock position.
The operator is not seated. Sit on the seat.
The battery is dead. Charge the battery.
The electrical connections are
corroded or loose.
Check the electrical connects for
good contact.
The fuse is blown. Replace the fuse.
The relay or switch is worn or
damaged.
Test and replace faulty relay or
switch.
The engine does not start,
starts hard, or fails to keep
running
The fuel tank is empty. Fill the fuel tank.
The fuel shut-off valve is closed. Open the fuel shut-off valve.
The oil level in the crankcase is low. Add oil to the crankcase.
The throttle is not in the correct
position.
Be sure that the throttle control is
midway between the slow and fast
positions.
There is dirt in the fuel filter. Replace the fuel filter.
There is dirt, water, or stale fuel in
the fuel system.
Clean and flush the fuel system.
The air cleaner is dirty. Clean or replace the air cleaner
element.
The seat switch is not functioning
properly.
Check the seat-switch indicator.
Replace the seat if necessary.
The electrical connections are
corroded, loose, or damaged.
Check the electrical connections for
good contact. Clean the connector
terminals thoroughly with electrical-
contact cleaner, apply dielectric
grease, and make the appropriate
connections.
The relay or switch is worn or
damaged.
Test and replace faulty relay or
switch.
The spark plug is fouled or
improperly gapped.
Adjust or replace the spark plug.
The spark plug wire is not
connected.
Check the spark plug wire
connection.
