Replacing a device
1. Shut down the computer and unplug the power cable.
2. Remove the case. See Opening the case.
3. Check the existing connections.
The motherboard has two IDE connectors: a primary device
connector and a secondary device connector. The primary device
connector is used for hard disk drives; the computers existing hard
disk drive is attached to this connector. The secondary device
connector is used for devices in the front expansion bays; the
computers CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive (if you have one) is attached to
this connector.
To locate and identify the connectors, see Motherboard.
4. Locate and remove IDE device connector.
N Primary device connectorLocate the IDE cable that is attached
to the back of the existing hard disk drive. You will be connecting
the replacement device to this connector.
N Secondary device connectorIf your computer has a
CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive installed, it will usually be connected to
the secondary IDE controller on the motherboard.
5. Locate and remove the power supply connector.
You will be connecting the replacement drive to this connector.
6. Remove the device you are replacing:
N If replacing a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive, remove the drive unit
and its bracket by pressing on the release clip at the top of the
unit. The CD-ROM drive must be removed before removing the
hard drive.
N If replacing a hard drive, be sure to remove the mounting pegs
on each side of the drive unit and to install them on the new
drive unit. The hard drive is simply set into a drive holder, and is
not secured into a bracket by screws.
