Connecting the computer to a network
Your computer has an on-board network adaptor which is ready to
connect to a LAN or WAN. For specific information about connecting to
the local or wide area network (LAN or WAN), consult your network
administrator.
When you are connected to a network, do not use the Windows Suspend
or Standby command, because you may lose access to the network
when you turn on the computer again.
Accessing the Internet
The Internet is a web of computer networks located all around the world.
If the computer is at your workplace, you may be able to access the
Internet over your company network. Otherwise, you must have an
account with a company that provides access to the Internet. This type of
company is called an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
You access the Internet using a program called a
browser
. Although your
operating system most likely comes with a browser, you can install and
use any commercially available browser that is compatible with your
operating system.
Turning off the computer
It is a good idea to turn off the computer when you will not use it for an
extended period.
■ When you want turn off the main components, such as CRT or HDD,
without turning off the computer power, you can enter the standby
mode with pressing the Power button or selecting the standby
command on Windows. To resume work, use the keyboard or mouse,
or press the Power button again.

To leave the computer turned off for a longer period, use your
operating system’s Shut Down command.
Never turn off the power while a disk activity light is on. Doing so may
damage the disk and result in loss of data.
Caring for the computer
This section offers tips on cleaning and moving the computer, and
protecting the data stored on floppy disks and compact discs.
Cleaning the computer
Keep liquid, including cleaning fluid, out of the system unit, monitor and
keyboard. Never spray cleaner directly onto the computer. Never use
harsh or caustic chemical products to clean the computer.
