4 GLOSSARY
* Aspect Ratio: It is the r atio of the width of the screen to the height. T he t wo rele vant di gital T V f orm ats are
16:9 (wide-s creen) or 4:3 ( the traditional scr een ratio) . 16:9 is m ore ergonom ically suitab le for the h uman e ye.
* Bandwidth: It is the frequ ency range tha t allows for c arrying a cert ain radio si gnal.
* Coaxial Cable: A type of c able used to transm it high f requenc y s ignals e.g. from the VHF/UHF a ntenna to the
terrestrial Digit al TV receiv er.
* Composite Video: There are three elem ents of the video s ystem: First - the "active video" which means the
picture to be displa yed on the scr een and its assoc iated colors; second - the "s ync" decides where t o place
each pixel o n the scr een; third - t he "blank ing” tells t he displa y when to tur n off the electron beam s o no retrace
across the scr een. Thes e three elem ents com bined to gether is called "com posite video" w hen connect ing to a
display through co nnectors .
* Dolby® Digital: Dolb Digital is a m ethod of transm itting and s toring m ulti-channel soun dtrack s via newer
digital m edia such as DVD , digital cab le, digital T V (DTV), an d satellite tr ansm issions.
* DVB: Abbre viation for "D igital Video Broadcastin g". An international organizatio n created in O ctober 199 3,
whose prim ary objective is to achieve a c omm on framework for all technical pl atform s of digital broadc asting
system s including DVB-C ( cable), DV B-S (satellite) and DVB-T (terres trial), etc.
* EPG: Stands f or "Electro nic Program G uide". It is a n a pplication that allo ws viewers to naviga te t hrough the
large num ber of channels o ffered b y digital TV broadc asters .
* Frequency: The propert y of a signal m easured in c ycles per secon d (=Hert z).
* HDCP: HDCP is a s pecific ation deve loped b y Int el Corporat ion to protect di gital enterta inment c ontent ac ross
the HDMI interf ace.
* HDMI: Abbreviatio n for High-Definition Multimedia Interface. HDMI com bines high- definition video and multi-
channel audio in a single di gital interface to provide cr ystal-clear digital qualit y over a single cabl e.
* Letterbox: The picture with aspect r atio 16:9 in a 4: 3 T V screen with blank lin es on top and bottom . It is the
means to watc h a wide sc reen TV pro gram on a 4: 3 TV sc reen.
* Megahertz (MHz): Millions of cycles per secon d, which desc ribes freque ncies of radio wave or electric c urrent.
* Mini D-Sub 15-pin Cable: A type of video c able use d to carry an alogue RGB video signa ls.
* OSD: Sta nds for "On Screen D ispla y". It pr ovides cl earer m enu f unctions b y us ing the TV or m onitor to dis pla y
the menu while the controls are on the rem ote control.
* RF Channel: R adio Frequenc y Channel, f or instanc e channel 28 f or SBS Net work in analogue T V transm ission.
However, in dig ital TV, one RF channel m ay carr y 4 to 6 sub-chan nels like S BS HD and SBS Digital.
* RGB: Stands f or Red, Gr een and B lue. RGB v ideo is the highest q uality video curr ently used in th e AV ind ustr y.
* S-Video (also called Y/C): The standard f or the way a video sign al is carri ed o n the cable. Y represents
brightness and C repr esent s color. S-V ideo cab les have separate wires for the color and brightness so it offers
a better picture q ualit y than the com posite video.
* VHF: Stands f or "Ver y Hi gh Fre quenc y", s tarts from 30 to 300MH z cor responding to ch annels 2-12, i nclud ing
Bands I, II and III.
