Selecting a place to work Your computer is portable and designed to be used in a variety of circumstances and locations. Creating a computer-friendly environment Place the computer on a flat surface which is large enough for the computer and any other items you need to use, such as a printer.

Getting Started Selecting a place to work Some PC Cards can become hot with prolonged use. If two cards are installed, both can become hot even if only one is used extensively. Overheating of a PC Card can result in errors or instability in the PC Card operation. Be careful when you remove a PC Card that has been used for lengthy periods of time. ❖ Avoid spilling liquids into the computer’s keyboard. If you do spill a liquid that gets into the keyboard, turn off the computer immediately.
Getting Started Setting up your computer 47 Important information on your computer’s cooling fan Your computer may have a CPU cooling fan that cools the CPU by drawing outside air into the computer. The cooling fan may be located on the bottom of the computer. To prevent possible overheating of the CPU, make sure the air intake on the cooling fan is not blocked. The fan draws in air by creating a vacuum.

Use the power cord/cable and AC adapter to connect the computer to a live electrical outlet, or to charge the computer’s battery. It takes several hours to charge the battery with the computer off. It takes much longer to charge the battery while the computer is on. For more information on battery use, see “Running the computer on battery power” on page 111. Once the battery is charged for the first time, avoid leaving the computer plugged in and turned off for more than a few hours at a time.

Getting Started Using the TouchPad™ Using the TouchPad™ The TouchPad, the small, smooth square cutout located in front of the keyboard, is sensitive to touch and enables you to move the cursor with the stroke of a finger. Simply move your finger on the TouchPad in the direction you would like to move the cursor: ❖ To move the cursor to the top of the page, push your finger forward on the TouchPad. ❖ To move the cursor to the bottom of the page, drag your finger toward yourself.

Using the Control buttons When a step instructs you to click or choose an item, move the cursor to the item, then press and release the primary (left-hand) button. To double-click, press the primary button twice in rapid succession.

If you install or remove a memory module while the computer is in Stand by or Hibernation mode, data will be lost.

To avoid damaging the computer’s screws, use a standard Phillips no. 1 screwdriver that is in good condition. The computer has two memory module slots—Slot A and Slot B. You can install one or two memory modules. If you are adding memory after you have started to use the computer, begin at step 1, otherwise skip to step 2. 1 Turn off the computer via the Start menu.

Sample removing the expansion module memory slot cover 5 Put the screw and cover in a safe place so that you can retrieve them later. Static electricity can damage the memory module.

Do not force the memory module into position. The memory module should be level when secured in place. Do not try to remove a memory module with the computer turned on. You can damage the computer and the device. Do not remove the memory module while the computer is in Standby mode. If you are using the computer for the first time, leave the computer plugged into a power source (even though the computer is off) to fully charge the main battery. With the computer off, it may take up to three hours to recharge the main battery.
Getting Started Caring for your computer Closing the display panel When you are finished, shut the computer down and close the display panel to keep dust and dirt out of the computer. If you close the computer while it is still on, these actions will occur: ❖ If you have the LCD power-saver feature set, the LCD panel will automatically turn off until you open it again. ❖ If you have the audible warning set, the computer will beep to notify you that it is still on.

If the RTC battery is low, the real-time clock and calendar may display the incorrect time and date or stop working. When Hibernation mode is enabled and the RTC battery is completely discharged, a warning prompts you to reset the real-time clock.

The DMA provides a dedicated channel for adapter cards to bypass the microprocessor and access memory directly. If two or more devices use the same DMA, the data required by one device overwrites the data required by the other. That may cause a hardware conflict.

Refer to the device’s documentation for instructions about changing settings on the device. Fixing a problem with Device Manager Device Manager provides a way to check and change the configuration of a device. Your display contains an extremely large number of thin-film transistors (TFT) and is manufactured using high-precision technology. NOTE Over a period of time, and depending on the usage of the computer, the brightness of the LCD Screen will deteriorate.

Examine the disc to see whether it is dirty. If necessary, wipe it with a clean cloth dipped in water or a neutral cleaner.

Adjust the volume control. If you are using external headphones or speakers, check that they are securely connected to your computer. The computer emits a loud, high-pitched noise.

Compare disk. disk — A round, flat piece of material that can be magnetically influenced to hold information in digital form, and used in the production of magnetic disks, such as diskettes and hard disks. Glossary DVD-ROM (digital versatile [or video] disc read-only memory) — A very high-capacity storage medium that uses laser optics for reading data. Each DVD-ROM can hold as much data as several CD-ROMs. Compare CD-ROM. E emulation — A technique in which a device or program imitates another device or program. enable — To turn on a computer option. See also disable. executable file — A computer program that is ready to run. Application programs and batch files are examples of executable files.
Glossary 217 function keys — The keys labeled F1 through F12, typically located on the keyboard. Their function is determined by the operating system and/or individual programs. G gigabyte (GB) — A unit of data equal to 1,073,741,824 bytes (1024 x 1024 x 1024 bytes). See also byte. ground — A conductor to which all components of an electric circuit are connected. It has a potential of zero (0) volts, is connected to the earth, and is the point of reference for voltages in the circuit.
Glossary interlaced — A method of refreshing a computer screen, in which only every other line of pixels is refreshed. Interlaced monitors take two passes to create a complete screen image. Compare non-interlaced. internal device — See device. Internet — The decentralized, world-wide network of computers that provides electronic mail, the World Wide Web, and other services. See also World Wide Web.
Glossary M 219 megabyte (MB) — A unit of data equal to 1,048,576 bytes (1024 x 1024 bytes). See also bytes. memory — Typically refers to the computer’s main memory, where programs are run and data is temporarily stored and processed. Memory can be volatile and hold data temporarily, such as RAM, or it can be nonvolatile and hold data permanently, such as ROM. A computer’s main memory is RAM. See RAM, ROM. microprocessor — See central processing unit (CPU).
Glossary NT file system (NTFS) — An advanced file system designed for use specifically with the Windows NT operating system. O online — Available through the computer. Online may refer to information being read from your own computer’s hard disk, such as online documentation or online help, or to information coming from another company on a company network or the Internet. operating system — A set of programs that controls how the computer works.
Glossary 221 processor — See central processing unit (CPU). program — A set of instructions that can be executed by a computer. The general classes of programs (also called software) are operating system, application, and utility. See also operating system, application, utility. properties — The attributes of an object or device. For example, the properties of a file include the file’s type, size, and creation date. R RAM (random access memory) — Volatile memory that can be written to as well as read.
Glossary ROM (read-only memory) — Non-volatile memory that can be read but not written to. By non-volatile, we mean that information in ROM remains whether or not the computer is receiving power. This type of memory is used to store your computer’s BIOS, which is essential instructions the computer reads when you start it up. See also BIOS, memory. Compare RAM. S select — To highlight or otherwise specify text, data, or graphics with the intent to perform some operation on it.
Glossary U 223 universal serial bus (USB) 2.0— A serial bus that supports a data transfer rate of up to 480 Mbps (480 million bits per second). USB can connect up to 127 peripheral devices through a single allpurpose USB port. USB allows hot swapping of peripherals. See also bus, hot swapping, serial. upload — To send a file to another computer through a modem or network. See also download. USB — See universal serial bus (USB).
