Fluorescent Leak Detection Dye For Coolant Systems
and Auto Body Leak Inspection
• Dye-Lite
®
fluorescent leak detection dye is used in conjunction
with Tracerline
®
ultraviolet or UV/blue light lamps to pinpoint leak
sources in cooling systems and auto body leak inspection.
You must wear fluorescence-enhancing glasses to protect your
eyes and to make leaks clearly visible. The glow will show best
under low light conditions.
• Diluted dye cleans off with water and will not stain the interior or
exterior surfaces of the vehicle. Wipe all concentrated or undiluted
dye spills promptly. Concentrated dye may stain hands and clothing.
COOLANT SYSTEM
1. Turn OFF the engine. Make sure the engine is cold before removing
the radiator cap to add dye. Use 1 oz (30 ml) of dye for every vehicle.
2. Run the engine and vehicle heater until they reach full operating
temperatures so the dye circulates. Smaller leaks may require longer
run time.
3. Turn OFF the engine. Scan the system with a Tracerline
®
lamp. In hard
to reach areas, use a mirror to reflect the light. As an alternative, wipe
suspect areas with a clean cloth and check the cloth with the lamp for
traces of the fluorescent dye. All leaks will show with a bright green
fluorescent glow. A small amount of dye may be added to increase the
glow. Additional dye will not harm the system.
4. After the leaks are repaired, clean the dye residue from the leak sites
with Tracer Products’ GLO-AWAY™ dye cleaner/remover or a general-
purpose shop cleaner. Reinspect with the lamp to see that no dye
remains. Run the engine for another 5 to 10 minutes and reinspect
again.
5. It is not necessary to change the coolant after adding the tracer dye.
When used properly, Dye-Lite
®
can remain safely in the system until the
coolant is changed.
AUTO BODY LEAK INSPECTION
1. Mix the dye in water in the proper dilution and spray the dye/water
solution on the outside of the vehicle where a leak is suspected.
2. Scan the inside of the vehicle with the lamp while wearing the glasses
to see any leak-through.
3. Wipe all areas with clean water.
Ratio of Dye to Water
1 oz (30 ml) to 6 gal (23 l)
CAUTION
Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool place away from
direct sunlight, heat sources and open flame. May be harmful
or fatal if swallowed. Avoid contact with eyes or skin. Wash
thoroughly after handling. Wipe all spills to avoid stains.
