Goal of the game: To be the first “team” to reach the required number of points.
Game configuration: There are 2 teams. Each team has 1, 2 or 4 players. You will need to mark off the game area.
This is shown in figure 1. The game of bocce can be played anywhere dirt or gravel work best, but grass or a beach
are okay too. Before starting the game, decide on the total number of points to achieve that will win the game. This
can be any number but it is traditionally either 7, 11 or 13. Give 4 bocce balls of the same color to each team. Use a
coin toss, or rock-paper-scissors to select which team goes first.
Fig. 1: Layout of bocce court
Starting the game: The first player on the starting side rolls or tosses the “Pallino” (the small white ball) into the
opposite half of the bocce court. The Pallino must me thrown from behind the foot line and land within the
boundaries of the court on the other side of the mid-line. All throws must be underhanded. If the Pallino does not
land in the right area, the player may take one “do-over” throw, but if that throw also lands incorrectly then the
opposing team may place the Pallino wherever they wish.
Once the Pallino lands in the correct area, the starting team takes the first throw. The player stands behind the foot
line on and throws the bocce ball into the court. The goal here is to land the bocce ball as close as possible to where
the Pallino landed. If the ball lands outside of the bocce court, it is considered “out of bounds” and is out of the game
for that particular round. After the starting team throws the first ball, the opposing team throws their first ball from
the same end.
