SAFE OPERATION PRACTICES 12. Never fuel equipment indoors because flammable vapors will accumulate in the area. 6. Maintain and replace safety and instruction labels as necessary. 13. Always refer to the operator’s manuals for important details if the equipment is to be stored for an extended period of time. 14. Check fuel line, tank, cap, and fittings frequently for cracks or leaks. Replace if necessary. 8.
SAFE OPERATION PRACTICES SPARK ARRESTOR If a spark arrestor is used, it should be maintained in effective working order by the operator. In the State of California the above is required by law (Section 4442 of the California Public Resources Code). Other states may have similar laws. Federal laws apply on federal lands. A spark arrestor for the muffler is available through your nearest engine authorized service dealer or contact the service department, P.O. Box 361131 Cleveland, Ohio 44136-0019.
SET-UP Fuel & Oil CHECKING OIL LEVEL/ADDING OIL NOTE: Be sure to check the oil while on a level surface with the engine off. IMPORTANT: The engine is shipped without fuel in the engine. See the following instructions for adding fuel. NOTE: To install or remove the oil fill cap, rotate 1/4 turn or push/ pull it from the oil fill neck. IMPORTANT: Some engines are shipped with oil already in the engine. It is very important to check the oil level and to add oil, if necessary.
SET-UP FUEL REQUIREMENTS 1. Be sure engine is outdoors and in a well-ventilated area. 2. Clean area around the fuel fill cap and remove the fuel cap. CAUTION 3. Use an approved red GASOLINE container, add fuel slowly, being careful to avoid spilling. Operating the engine with E15 or E85 fuel, an oil/ gasoline mixture, dirty gasoline, or gasoline over 30 days old without fuel stabilizing additive may result in damage to your engine’s carburetor.

OPERATION Starting the Engine Pre-Operation Check IMPORTANT: The engine is shipped without fuel in the engine. See the Set-Up section of this manual for instructions on adding fuel. WARNING Never allow children under 14 years of age to operate the equipment. Children 14 and over should read and understand the warnings and instructions both on the equipment and in the manuals and be trained and supervised by an adult. IMPORTANT: Some engines are shipped with oil already in the engine.
OPERATION Engines With Electric Starters Familiarize yourself with the engine symbols shown in Figure 5 before attempting to start engine. If engine is remotely controlled by the equipment it is powering, be sure to familiarize yourself with the equipment Operator’s Manual as well. If you have a manual recoil starter, see Engines with Recoil Starters later in this section. WARNING Fast Slow/Idle DO NOT pull recoil starter with engine running. Doing so may VOID YOUR WARRANTY. Engine Off WARNING 1.
OPERATION Engines with Recoil Starters 4. Move engine speed control, if equipped, in the “FAST” position. 5. If equipped, set the choke control to “FULL CHOKE” position. If you have an electric starter, see Engines with Electric Starters earlier in this section. 6. If equipped, Prime 3 - 5 times. • Make sure you cover the vent hole with your thumb. WARNING • Hold the primer bulb in for one full second each time you press it. DO NOT pull recoil starter with engine running.
OPERATION Stopping the Engine & Short Term Storage 7. If the engine fails to start after 3 attempts repeat steps 5 through 6 and try again. WARNING 8. When the engine starts: To avoid unsupervised equipment operation, especially by children, NEVER leave the engine running while unattended. Always turn off the engine after use and remove the safety key, if equipped. • Move the choke control to 1/2 “CHOKE” position until the engine runs smoothly. • Next, move the choke control to the “NO CHOKE” position.
SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE WARNING Shut off the engine before performing any maintenance. To prevent accidental start-up, remove the safety key or disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against the engine. General Recommendations Periodic inspection and adjustment of the engine is essential if high level performance is to be maintained. Regular maintenance will also ensure a long service life. The required service intervals and the kind of maintenance to be performed are described in the table below.
SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE Changing the Oil To avoid engine damage, it is important to: Check oil level before each use and every 5 operating hours when the engine is warm. See Checking Oil Level/Adding Oil on page 5. Change the oil after the first 5 operating hours and every 50 operating hours thereafter. Engine should still be warm but NOT HOT from recent use.
SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE Air Filter Spark Plug Service NOTE: Not all engines have air filters, such as engines used for snow blowers. Service the air filter if one is present. WARNING DO NOT check for spark with spark plug removed. DO NOT crank engine with spark plug removed. Paper filters cannot be cleaned and must be replaced once a year or every 100 operating hours; more often if used in extremely dusty conditions. Check the spark plug yearly or every 100 operating hours.
SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE Carburetor Transporting Your Engine If you think your carburetor needs adjusting, see your nearest Authorized MTD Servicing Dealer. Engine performance should NOT be affected at altitudes up to 7,000 feet (2,134 meters). For operation at higher elevations, contact your Authorized MTD Servicing Dealer. WARNING NEVER transport this engine inside of another vehicle or in any enclosed space if there is any fuel in the tank. Fuel vapor or spilled fuel may ignite.
SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE Extended Storage NOTE: Do not spray engine with water to clean because water could contaminate fuel. Using a garden hose or pressure washing equipment can also force water into the air cleaner or muffler opening. Water in the air cleaner will soak the paper element, and water that passes through the element or muffler can enter the cylinder, causing damage. DRAINING THE FUEL NOTE: Clean debris from the engine before draining fuel from the carburetor.
SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE 7. For recoil starter engines: Off-Season Storage • Grasp the recoil starter handle. CAUTION • Pull the recoil starter handle out slowly using a full arm stroke. Failure to use a fuel stabilizing additive or completely run the engine until it’s out of fuel before off-season storage may result in damage to your engine’s carburetor. Subsequent damage would not be covered under the manufacturer’s warranty. • Repeat once.

PRÁCTICAS DE OPERACIÓN SEGURAS AMORTIGUADOR DE CHISPAS ADVERTENCIA Cualquier equipo que tenga un motor de combustión interna no debe ser utilizado en o cerca de un terreno agreste cubierto por bosque, malezas o hierba excepto que el sistema de escape del motor esté equipado con un amortiguador de chispas que cumpla con las leyes locales o estatales correspondientes (en caso de existir). Si se utiliza un amortiguador de chispas, el operador lo debe mantener en condiciones de uso adecuadas.
CONFIGURACIÓN Combustible y Aceite IMPORTANTE: El motor se envía sin combustible. Para agregar combustible, consulte las siguientes instrucciones. IMPORTANTE: Algunos motores se envían ya con aceite. Es muy importante controlar el nivel del aceite y agregar más si es necesario. Si se hace funcionar el motor sin suficiente aceite puede dañarse gravemente y se anula la garantía. RECOMENDACIONES SOBRE EL ACEITE Antes de encender el motor, llene con aceite para motor; la capacidad es de 600 ml/20 oz.
CONFIGURACIÓN REQUISITOS DE COMBUSTIBLE PRECAUCIÓN Si se opera el motor con combustible E15 o E85, una mezcla de aceite/gasolina, gasolina sucia o gasolina con más de 30 días de uso que no se haya estabilizado con un aditivo de combustible, se puede dañar el carburador del motor. A los daños subsiguientes no los cubre la garantía del fabricante. Utilice gasolina para automóviles (sin plomo o con bajo contenido de plomo para minimizar los depósitos en la cámara de combustión) con un mínimo de 87 octanos.

FUNCIONAMIENTO Arranque del Motor K. LLAVE DE SEGURIDAD (SI SE INCLUYE) La llave de seguridad es un dispositivo de seguridad. Debe estar completamente insertada para que el motor arranque. Extraiga la llave de seguridad cuando no use el equipo. ADVERTENCIA No permita nunca que los niños menores de 14 años hagan funcionar el equipo.
FUNCIONAMIENTO 1. Para evitar el envenenamiento por monóxido de carbono, asegúrese de que el motor se encienda y funcione al aire libre en un área bien ventilada. 2. Compruebe que la válvula de paso del combustible, si está incluida (consulte las instrucciones del Manual del Operador del equipo), esté abierta y que todos los interruptores estén en la posición de encendido. Para prevenir el encendido accidental, extraiga la llave de seguridad o desconecte el cable de la bujía y conecte a tierra contra el motor. Recomendaciones Generales La inspección y los ajustes periódicos del motor son esenciales si se desea mantener un alto nivel de desempeño. El mantenimiento regular también garantizará una prolongada vida útil del motor.
SERVICIO Y MANTENIMIENTO ADVERTENCIA ADVERTENCIA El aceite usado del motor puede causar cáncer de piel si entra en contacto con la piel de manera reiterada y por períodos prolongados. Si bien esto es improbable a menos que manipule aceite usado todos los días, sin embargo es recomendable lavarse bien las manos con agua y jabón inmediatamente después de haber manipulado aceite usado.
SERVICIO Y MANTENIMIENTO 4. Inspeccione visualmente la bujía. Elimine la bujía si presenta mucho desgaste, o si el aislante está agrietado o astillado. Reemplace la bujía si los electrodos están picados, quemados o saturados con depósitos. 5. Limpie la bujía con un cepillo de alambre si se va a reutilizar. 6. Mida la separación de bujía con un calibrador. Corrija de ser necesario torciendo el electrodo lateral (a) (Figura 10). La separación debe establecerse entre 0.030 - 0.06 pulgadas (0.76 - 1.5 mm). 7.
SERVICIO Y MANTENIMIENTO Velocidad del motor Si NO dispone de un vehículo abierto y tiene que transportar el motor en posición vertical en un vehículo cerrado, siga estos pasos para vaciar el depósito de combustible antes de transportar el motor: ADVERTENCIA Para evitar lesiones graves o la muerte, NO modifique el motor de ninguna manera. La manipulación del ajuste del regulador puede modificar la regulación del motor y hacer que éste funcione a velocidades inseguras.
SERVICIO Y MANTENIMIENTO ADVERTENCIA La acumulación de residuos alrededor del silenciador podría producir un incendio. Inspeccione y limpie antes y después de cada uso. NOTA: Si ya preparó el combustible para el almacenamiento a corto plazo NO es necesario drenar del carburador el combustible que contiene un estabilizador. ADVERTENCIA Antes de inclinar el motor o equipo para drenar el aceite, drene el combustible del depósito haciendo funcionar el motor hasta que el depósito de combustible quede vacío.
SERVICIO Y MANTENIMIENTO 13. Extraiga todo el combustible del depósito haciendo funcionar el motor hasta que se detenga por falta de combustible. 7. Para motores con arrancadores de retroceso: • Tome la manija del arrancador de retroceso. • Tire de la manija del arrancador de retroceso hacia afuera lentamente con un golpe de todo el brazo. ADVERTENCIA Nunca deje el motor sin vigilancia mientras está en funcionamiento. • Repita una vez.

PRÉPARATION Essence et huile VÉRIFICATION DU NIVEAU D’HUILE ET AJOUT DE L’HUILE NOTE : Assurez-vous de placer l’appareil sur une surface plane et d’arrêter le moteur avant d’effectuer la vérification. IMPORTANT : Cet appareil est livré sans essence. Effectuez les étapes suivantes pour ajouter de l’essence dans le réservoir. NOTE : Pour mettre le bouchon ou pour l’enlever, tournez-le d’un quart de tour, poussez-le ou tirez-le. IMPORTANT : Certains moteurs sont livrés avec de l’huile dans le réservoir.
PRÉPARATION ESSENCE 1. Faites le plein à l’extérieur, dans un endroit bien aéré. ATTENTION Le carburateur du moteur peut être endommagé si vous utilisez de l’essence E15 ou E85, un mélange d’huile et d’essence, de l’essence sale ou de plus de 30 jours. Ces dommages ne sont pascouverts par la garantie. Utilisez de l’essence automobile (essence sans plomb ou essence à faible teneur en plomb) avec un indice d’octane de 87 ou plus.

ROBINET D’ARRÊT D'ESSENCE (LE CAS ÉCHÉANT) Le cas échéant, ce robinet permet de contrôler l'arrivée de l’essence pour le fonctionnement, le transport et l'entreposage du moteur. A. COMMANDE D'ACCÉLÉRATION La commande d'accélération sert à contrôler la vitesse du moteur et à arrêter le moteur (lorsque la commande est déplacée à la position ARRÊT). H.
UTILISATION Démarrage du moteur Vérification initiale IMPORTANT : Cet appareil est livré sans essence. Consultez la section Montage de ce manuel pour les instructions de remplissage du réservoir d’essence. AVERTISSEMENT L’âge minimum pour pouvoir utiliser cette tondeuse est de 14 ans.
UTILISATION Moteurs équipés d’un démarreur électrique Familiarisez-vous avec les symboles illustrés à la Figure 5 avant de démarrer le moteur. Si les commandes ne se trouvent pas sur le moteur, assurez-vous de lire attentivement le manuel de l'utilisateur de cet équipement. Si vous utilisez un lanceur à rappel, consultez la sous-section Moteurs équipés d'un démarreur à rappel.
UTILISATION 4. Le cas échéant, placez la commande de vitesse du moteur à la position RAPIDE (« FAST »). Moteurs équipés d’un lanceur à rappel 5. Le cas échéant, placez la commande d'étrangleur à la position ÉTRANGLEUR (« FULL CHOKE »). Si votre moteur est doté d'un démarreur électrique, référez-vous à la sous-section Moteurs équipés d'un démarreur électrique. 6. Appuyez sur la poire d'amorçage 3 à 5 fois. • Couvrez l'évent avec votre pouce.
UTILISATION Arrêt du moteur et remisage de courte durée 7. Si le moteur ne démarre pas après 3 tentatives, répétez les étapes 5 et 6. AVERTISSEMENT 8. Quand le moteur démarre : Ne laissez jamais le moteur sans surveillance lorsqu'il est en marche. Après utilisation, arrêtez le moteur et retirez la clé de contact (le cas échéant). • Placez la commande d'étrangleur à la moitié de sa course jusqu'à ce que le moteur tourne régulièrement. • Puis, désengagez la commande d'étrangleur.
ENTRETIEN ET RÉPARATION AVERTISSEMENT Arrêtez le moteur avant d'effectuer son entretien. Retirez la clé de contact ou débranchez le fil de bougie et mettez-le à la masse contre le moteur pour empêcher un démarrage accidentel. Recommandations générales L'entretien périodique et les réglages sont importants et permettent de maintenir la performance du moteur à un niveau élevé. Un entretien régulier lui assurera une longue durée de vie. Le tableau affiche le calendrier d'entretien et les travaux d'entretien.
ENTRETIEN ET RÉPARATION Changement d’huile NOTE : Le bouchon peut se trouver sur le devant ou à l’arrière du bloc-moteur ou être un tube, selon le modèle du moteur. Figure 9. La Figure 4 à la page 44 représente des exemples. Pour éviter d'endommager le moteur, il est important de : Vérifier le niveau d'huile avant chaque utilisation et toutes les cinq heures de fonctionnement quand le moteur est chaud. Consultez la sous-section Vérification du niveau d’huile et ajout de l’huile la page 42. 3.
ENTRETIEN ET RÉPARATION Entretien de la bougie d’allumage AVERTISSEMENT Ne vérifiez pas l'état de la bougie si elle n'est pas installée. Ne faites pas tourner le moteur sans la bougie d'allumage. Vérifiez la bougie chaque année ou toutes les 100 heures d'utilisation. La bougie ne doit pas être encrassée et son écart doit être approprié pour que le moteur fonctionne bien. Filtre à air NOTE : Certains moteurs ne sont pas dotés d'un filtre à air, comme ceux installés sur les souffleuses à neige.
ENTRETIEN ET RÉPARATION Réglages Déblaiement de la neige N'effectuez pas de réglages sur le moteur. En général, les réglages effectués à l'usine sont appropriés. Si des réglages sont nécessaires, adressez-vous à votre centre de service agréé MTD.
ENTRETIEN ET RÉPARATION Entreposage du moteur Entreposage de courte durée ou saisonnier Pour nettoyer le moteur, assurez-vous de le laisser refroidir pendant au moins 30 minutes. Retirez le couvercle du carburateur et du boîtier du ventilateur. Enlevez la poussière et les débris des éléments suivants : ailettes de refroidissement, entrée d'air, lanceur à rappel/protecteur du volant moteur, branchement de la bougie d’allumage, leviers, tringlerie, protecteurs, carburateur, culasse.
ENTRETIEN ET RÉPARATION LUBRIFICATION DE L'ALÉSAGE DU CYLINDRE 9. Enlevez le chiffon du trou de la bougie d'allumage. 10. Installez la bougie d'allumage. AVERTISSEMENT 11. Le cas échéant, débranchez le fil de la bougie de la borne de mise à la masse. Lorsque vous lubrifiez l'alésage, il est possible que de l’essence soit projetée du trou de la bougie d'allumage. Pour prévenir des blessures causées par un incendie, procédez comme suit : 12. Branchez le fil à la bougie d'allumage. Huile 1.
