Children Service 1. Safe Handling of Gasoline: Tragic accidents can occur if the operator is not alert to the presence of children. Periodically check to make sure the blades come to complete stop within approximately (5) five seconds after operating the blade disengagement control. If the blades do not stop within the this time frame, your machine should be serviced professionally by an authorized MTD Service Dealer. Do not modify engine 4. 5. CAUTION: Do not use any type of power tool (e.g. impact gun or electric drill with nut driver attached) when tightening the self-tapping bolts to attach the seat bracket. Tighten the socket head screw and lock nut using provided hex key and a 7/16” wrench or ratchet. 1 2 2 Figure 3-2 6. Slide the Pedestal cap down onto the tractor (1) and clip into place. 6. To adjust the position of the seat, remove the wing knob on the bottom of the seat. Slide the seat forward or backward as desired. Reinstall the wing knob. Refer to Fig. 3-5. Install The Rear Engine Cover 1. Install the rear engine cover by positioning it in place as shown in Figure 3-8. Tip the engine cover forward to fit it into the slots provided, then rotate it backwards to align the mounting holes.
Connecting the Battery Cables CALIFORNIA PROPOSITION 65 WARNING: Battery posts, terminals, and related accessories contain lead and lead compounds, chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling. CAUTION: When attaching battery cables, always connect the POSITIVE (Red) wire to its terminal first, followed by the NEGATIVE (Black) wire.

Throttle / Choke Control The throttle control lever is located on the left fender of the tractor seated in the operator’s position, see Fig. 4-1. This lever controls the speed of the engine, as well as the choke when it is pushed all the way forward. When set in a given position, the throttle will maintain a uniform engine speed. On/Lights Start IMPORTANT: When operating the tractor with the cutting deck engaged, be certain that the throttle lever is always in the FAST (rabbit) position.
Speed Control Lever Deck Lift Lever The speed control lever, located on the right side of the tractor’s steering console, allows you to regulate the ground speed of the lawn tractor. Found on your tractor’s right fender, the deck lift lever is used to change the height of the cutting deck. To use, move the lever to the left, then place in the notch best suited for your application.
5 Operation WARNING • • • • • • • • • • • • Avoid Serious Injury or Death Know location and function of all controls. Remove objects which could be thrown by the blades. Go up and down slopes, not across. Use extra caution on slopes. Do not mow slopes greater than 12 degrees. Avoid sudden turns. Use low speed. Do not operate machine where it could tip or slip. If machine stops going uphill, stop blades and back down slowly.
3. Engage the tractor’s parking brake. 4. Activate the choke control. 5. Turn the ignition key clockwise to the START position. After the engine starts, release the key. It will return to the ON position. IMPORTANT: Do NOT hold the key in the START position for longer than ten seconds at a time. Doing so may cause damage to your engine’s electric starter. b 6. a After the engine starts, deactivate the choke control by placing the throttle control into the FAST position.
6. The lawn tractor is brought to a stop by depressing the clutch-brake pedal. NOTE: When operating the unit initially, there will be little difference between the highest two speeds until after the belts have seated themselves into the pulleys during the break-in period. WARNING! Before leaving the operator’s position for any reason, disengage the blades, place the shift lever in neutral, engage the parking brake, shut engine off and remove the key.
6 Maintenance & Adjustments Maintenance WARNING: Before performing any maintenance or repairs, disengage PTO, move shift lever into neutral position, set parking brake, stop engine and remove key to prevent unintended starting. Engine Refer to the Engine Owner’s Manual for engine maintenance instructions. Check engine oil level before each use as instructed in the Engine Owner’s Manual packed with your unit. Follow the instructions carefully.
• Always keep the rubber boot positioned over the positive terminal to prevent shorting. IMPORTANT: If removing the battery for any reason, disconnect the NEGATIVE (Black) wire from it’s terminal first, followed by the POSITIVE (Red) wire. When re-installing the battery, always connect the POSITIVE (Red) wire its terminal first, followed by the NEGATIVE (Black) wire.
NOTE: Threading the ferrule too far onto the tie-rod will cause the front tires to “toe-in” too far. Proper toe-in is between 1/16” and 5/16”. Front tire toe-in can be measured as follows: 1. Place the steering wheel in position for straight ahead travel. 2. In front of the axle, measure the distance horizontally from the inside of the left rim to the inside of the right rim. Note the distance. 3.
2. If emptying the fuel system: • • Do not drain fuel when the engine is hot. Allow the engine adequate time to cool. Drain fuel into an approved container outdoors, away from open flame. • Drain any large volume of fuel from the tank by disconnecting the fuel line from the in-line fuel filter near the engine. See the complete instructions for Draining The Fuel later in this section. Remove the spark plug and pour one (1) ounce of engine oil through the spark plug hole into the cylinder.
7 Service Cutting Deck Removal 5. To remove the cutting deck, proceed as follows: 1. Place the PTO (Blade Engage) lever in the disengaged (OFF) position and engage the parking brake. 2. Lower the deck by moving the deck lift lever into the bottom notch on the right fender. 3. Remove the bow-tie cotter pin and flat washer from the deck lift assembly, and retain for reinstallation later. See Fig. 7-1. Remove the remaining bow-tie cotter pins securing the deck to the unit, as shown in Fig. 7-3.
Changing the Deck Belt NOTE: It is possible to change the deck belt with the cutting deck still installed on the tractor, however it is much easier to remove the deck first, change the deck belt, then reinstall the cutting deck. To change the cutting deck belt, proceed as follows: 1. It is easiest to change the deck belt by first removing the cutting deck as instructed earlier in this section first. Skip this step if deciding to change the deck belt with the mowing deck still installed on the unit.
CAUTION: If the jumper battery is installed on a vehicle (i.e. car, truck), do NOT start the vehicle’s engine when jump starting your tractor. 5. Start the tractor as instructed in the Operation section of this manual. 6. Set the tractor’s parking brake before removing the jumper cables, in reverse order of connection.
Changing the Transmission Drive Belt NOTE: Several components must be removed and special tools (i.e. air/impact wrench) in order to change the tractor’s drive belt. See an authorized Troy-bilt Service Dealer to have your drive belt replaced or phone Customer Support as instructed on page 2 for information on ordering a Service Manual. Figure 7-8 WARNING! If the cutting edge of the blade has previously been sharpened, or if any metal separation is present, replace the blades with new ones.

Acelerador / Control del estrangulador La palanca de control del acelerador está situado en el guardabarros izquierdo del tractor sentado en la posición del operador, ver fig. 4-1. Esta palanca controla la velocidad del motor, así como el estrangulador cuando se empuja hasta el fondo. Cuando se encuentra en una posición determinada, el regulador mantendrá una velocidad de motor uniforme.
De Velocidad Palanca de elevación de la plataforma La palanca de control de velocidad, ubicado en el lado izquierdo del tablero del tractor de la consola, le permite regular la velocidad baja del tractor del césped. Ubicada en el guardabarros derecho del tractor, la palanca de elevación de la plataforma se utiliza para cambiar la altura de la plataforma de corte. Para utilizarla, mueva la palanca hacia la izquierda, luego colóquela en la muesca que mejor se adapte a la aplicación deseada.
5 Funcionamiento ADVERTENCIA Colocación del freno de mano Para colocar el freno de mano: PARA EVITAR LESIONES PERSONALES GRAVES O LA MUERTE 1. • EN LAS PENDIENTES CONDUZCA HACIA ARRIBA Y HACIA ABAJO, NO DE FORMA TRANSVERSAL. • EVITE MANIOBRAS DE GIRO BRUSCAS. • NO OPERE LA UNIDAD EN ÁREAS DONDE PUEDE DERRAPAR O TROPEZAR. • SI LA MÁQUINA DEJA DE SUBIR LA PENDIENTE, DETENGA LA(S) CUCHILLA(S) Y RETROCEDA LENTAMENTE BAJANDO LA PENDIENTE.
Detención del motor ¡ADVERTENCIA! Si golpea contra algún objeto extraño, detenga el motor, desconecte el(los) cable(s) de la bujía y conecte el motor a masa. Inspeccione minuciosamente la máquina para ver si está dañada. Repare el daño antes de volver a arrancar el motor y operar la máquina. 1. Si las cuchillas están enganchadas, coloque la palanca de la potencia de arranque (PTO) (enganche de cuchilla) en la posición OFF (desconectada). 2.
NOTA: Modelos con modo de precaución en marcha atrás: El motor se apagará automáticamente si la potencia de arranque (PTO) está enganchada con la palanca de cambios en posición de marcha atrás con la llave de encendido en la posición de CORTE NORMAL. Utilización de la palanca de elevación de la plataforma Para elevar la plataforma de corte, mueva la palanca de elevación de la plataforma hacia la izquierda y colóquela en la muesca que mejor se adapte a la aplicación deseada.
Mantenimiento y Ajustes Mantenimiento ¡ADVERTENCIA! Antes de realizar cualquier tipo de mantenimiento o servicio, desenganche todos los controles y detenga el motor. Espere a que se detengan completamente todas las piezas móviles. Desconecte el cable de la bujía y póngalo haciendo masa contra el motor para evitar que se encienda accidentalmente. 6 6. Gire la válvula de drenaje hacia la izquierda para abrir la válvula y comenzar el flujo de petróleo.
Dirección de piñón y cremallera Batería Una vez por temporada, o cada 25 horas de funcionamiento, será necesario para la lubricación de la cremallera y piñón situado en la parte delantera de la unidad. Con grasa automotriz estándar, aplique grasa en la parte frontal y parte posterior de la cremallera de dirección, como se indica en la figura. 6-2. La batería está sellada y no necesita mantenimiento. Los niveles de ácido no se pueden controlar.
2. Pase el casquillo hacia el interior para “dedo del pie-en” las ruedas, o hacia fuera para “los dedos hacia afuera” de las ruedas. 3. Vuelva a colocar la varilla férula en el conjunto del lado del eje derecho y seguro con el pasador de pajarita retiró en el paso 1. 3. Localice la tuerca de la brida en el extremo frontal de la Barra de Elevación PTO. Ver fig. 6-4. NOTA: Enhebrado de la férula demasiado lejos en el tirante causará que los neumáticos delanteros a “dedo del pie-en” demasiado lejos.
2. • Añadir a la gasolina limpia y fresca la cantidad correcta de estabilizador de la capacidad del sistema de combustible. • Llene el tanque de combustible con combustible tratado y haga funcionar el motor durante 2-3 minutos para obtener el combustible estabilizado en el carburador. • ¡ADVERTENCIA! La gasolina es una sustancia tóxica. Disponer de la gasolina correctamente. Póngase en contacto con las autoridades locales de los métodos de eliminación autorizados.
7 Servicio Eliminación de la cubierta de corte 5. Para eliminar la plataforma de corte, haga lo siguiente: 1. Coloque la PTO (enganche de cuchilla) en la palanca de desconexión (OFF) y el freno de estacionamiento. 2. Baje la plataforma moviendo la palanca de elevación de la plataforma en la ranura inferior del guardabarros derecho. 3. Retire el pasador de pajarita y una arandela plana de la asamblea elevación de la plataforma, y retener para su reinstalación después. Ver Fig. 7-1.
Cambio de la correa cubierta 8. NOTA: Es posible cambiar la correa de la cubierta con la plataforma de corte sigue instalado en el tractor, sin embargo, es mucho más fácil quitar la cubierta en primer lugar, cambiar la correa de la cubierta, vuelva a instalar la plataforma de corte. Alimentar el cinturón de la cubierta a través del soporte guardacorrea y trabajar a su alrededor y en la polea de transmisión de la TDF, como se muestra en la Fig. 7-2.
3. Conecte el segundo cable negativo (-) para el otro puesto de la batería del puente. 4. Hacer la conexión final en el bloque del motor del tractor, lejos de la batería.
