and understandall safety, controland
operating instructions in this Manual,
the separate Engine Owner's Manual
and thedecalson the machine.
Failure to follow these instructionscan
resultin seriouspersonalinjury.
PRE-STARTPREPARATION
Beforestarting the engine, performthe
following checksand services:
1. Disconnectthe spark plug wire from
the spark plug.
2. Movethe engine On/Off switch to the
OFFposition.
S. Checkthat all wires and cablesare
properly and securely connected.

6. Check hardwarefor tightness.
7. Checkengine oil level (seeEngine
Owner's Manual).
8. Checkthe air filter (see Engine Owner's
Manual).
9. Adjust thetilling depth as follows:
a. Loosen tilling depth adjustment
knob (A, Figure 3).
Figure3
b. Movewheel bracket (B, Figure 3) up
in relation to height adjustment bar
(C). Moving bracketupward results
in shallower tilling, which is recom-
mended for initial use.
IMPORTANT:Do not movethe wheel
bracket any higherthan the top of
the adjustment bar.
c. Retightenthe depth adjustment
knob.
10. Reconnectthe spark plug wire.
GASOLINEIS HIGHLYFLAMMABLEAND
ITSVAPORSAREEXPLOSIVE.
Followthe gasoline safety rules in this
Manual (Section1) and in the separate
EngineOwner'sManual.
Failureto follow gasolinesafetyinstruc-
tions can result in serious personal
injuryand propertydamage.
11. Add gasoline to the fuel tank.
IMPORTANT:Readthe separateEngine
Owner'sManual before starting the
engine. Never usestale or contaminated
gasoline or oil/gas mix. The engine must
bestopped and cool beforeadding gas.
Fill the fuel tank with unleadedgasoline
(with a pump octane rating of 86 or
higher) according to the directions in the
separate EngineOwner's Manual. The
engine is a vertical type, GX31 model.

Failureto complycanresult in personal
injuryor propertydamage.
To stop the engine, movethe On/Oft
Switch (A, Figure2) to the OFFposition.
NOTE: The On/Oft switch wire must be
securely connected at both ends. Check
regularly to ensure that the switch wire is

choke lever in the OPENposition.
3. To start a cold engine, or after refueling
an engine that hasrun out of fuel, press
the priming bulb (A, Figure4) repeatedly
until fuel can beseen in the clear-plastic

engine, it is not necessaryto press the
priming bulb.
4. Moveto the starting position (Figure

awayfrom the tines.
5. Placeone hand on the upper handlebar
to stabilize the machine. Usethe other
