Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Contact may cause mild irritation, redness, and pain
Skin Contact:
No adverse effects expected
Ingestion:
Material is practically non-toxic. Small amounts (1-2 tablespoonfuls)
swallowed during normal handling operations are not likely to cause
injury as long as the stomach is not overly full; swallowing larger
amounts may cause injury (see note in section 4).
Inhalation:
High concentrations of dust may cause coughing and sneezing.
Subchronic Effects /
Carcinogenicity:
Based on published studies on its effects in animals and humans,
sodium bicarbonate is not teratogenic or genotoxic. Only known
subchronic effect is that of a marked systemic alkalosis. Not classified
as carcinogenic by NTP, IARC, OSHA, ACGIH or NIOSH.
